COMMUNITY NEWS

  • American Post Legion 421 cleaned up Mount Auburn Cemetery Saturday morning with help from the Kansas Senators baseball team — a tradition to prepare the site for Memorial Day visitors to honor fallen military members. Volunteers trimmed grass and collected trash to beautify the historic cemetery.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Sons of Union Veterans held their annual ceremony at the Topeka Cemetery to honor Civil War and World War II veterans, featuring speakers and the playing of Taps.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rowena Johnson Sanders, 89, is honored for her historic walk to get an education during segregation at Monroe School on Saturday; the commemoration featured a Topeka High drumline performance and remarks on Brown v. Board’s legacy in integrating public schools.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kansas won its first Big 12 Baseball Tournament title since 2006 with a 9-0 win over West Virginia. The Jayhawks became the fourth team to capture both regular season and tournament championships, and they will learn tomorrow if they will host a regional.  WIBW
  • Former Washburn Rural standout Emmerson Cope is leading Nebraska in the NCAA Super Regionals and will compete in Game 2 this Saturday at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN & hopes to help the Huskers reach the Women’s College World Series.  WIBW
