COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City of Topeka is hosting free Tire Takeback events on Saturday, June 6 and Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Utility Yard near Southeast Lakewood Boulevard and Southeast 21st Street, where residents can drop off up to 10 tires by showing valid ID. WIBW
- ➤ The Rock Chalk Roundball Classic will be held on Thursday, June 4 at Lawrence Free State High School, where doors open at 5 p.m. with tipoff at 7 p.m. This event supports children fighting cancer and helps families manage health care expenses. WIBW
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Schendel Lawn and Landscape in Topeka has added a fuel surcharge as rising oil costs increased expenses by 50% since the company budgeted last November. The extra charge will be removed when gas prices drop (AAA Kansas reports prices rose from $3.50 to about $4 per gallon). WIBW

- ➤ Topeka and Azura Credit Union are hosting the free Money Moves Pop-Up Initiative on Thursday, May 28 from 5:30 to 6 p.m. at the Azura parking lot on SW 10th, where residents can learn about budgeting, saving, credit, and financial planning. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City leaders approved a new I-470 interchange near 29th and California to spur economic growth in East Topeka and enhance emergency response. Construction begins next year and will finish by 2028 (backed by a nearly $4 million offer from the Kansas Turnpike Authority). WIBW
- ➤ Topeka Police will replace a memorial for fallen officers destroyed in a DUI crash last year; they have raised nearly $40,000 and scheduled fundraising meals at Qdoba (Thu, 4–8 p.m.), Texas Roadhouse on June 8, and The Pad on July 28, with a final design to come after the events. WIBW
- ➤ Kansas legislative leaders approved Gov. Kelly’s request Tuesday to extend an emergency declaration so officials can monitor three asymptomatic residents in voluntary isolation (the extension lasts until June 7 to cover the 42-day incubation period). Kansas Reflector
