  • The Topeka Community Cycle Project unveiled a new vending machine that stocks essential bike parts on Tuesday, May 27 at the Shawnee County Central Park Community Center during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The machine—custom wrapped by Azura Credit Union—accepts cash and is available during the center’s open hours.  WIBW
  • The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library will open its reinvented Kids Library tomorrow at 9 a.m. at 1515 S.W. 10th Ave, offering interactive zones such as art projection, a tech space for teens, and cozy story nooks — part of the library’s Facilities Master Plan.  WIBW
  • Bikers will join the Save a Life Poker Ride on May 31 to raise awareness about fentanyl dangers, with registration starting at 11 a.m. and the ride beginning at noon at Kickstart Saloon at 2521 N. Kansas Ave. The event will return between 4 and 5 p.m. for auctions, dinner from a food truck + live music, with proceeds benefiting TK Fights Fentanyl and Kaylee’s Dad is Dad.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A single-vehicle crash occurred Tuesday morning May 27 on westbound I-70 near the S.E. Adams Street exit east of downtown Topeka—emergency crews responded by 8 a.m., and no injuries were immediately reported.  WIBW
  • Crews responded to a crash at 7:39 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of S.W. Huntoon Street and MacVicar Avenue in west-central Topeka—there were no immediate reports of injuries.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested Rahjgerio G. Smith, 24, after witnesses and video showed him firing a handgun 16 times at a passing GMC Envoy near Southwest Lincoln Street and Southwest Huntoon Street at 5:50 p.m. on April 28—he faces charges of attempted murder and other firearm and property crimes.  KSNT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kansas farmers and ranchers are watching trade negotiations and tariffs along with a pending Farm Bill in Washington because many have relied on government payments after low crop yields. Experts from Kansas State University and the Kansas Cattlemen’s Association warned that ongoing policy uncertainty may continue to hurt both crop and livestock operations—adding to financial challenges in the industry.  Kansas Reflector

  • Washburn Rural High School was named the top school in Kansas in the 2025 Intuit Hour of Finance Challenge by USD 437. More than 30 students competed in the event to learn real-world money skills through interactive activities—focusing on budgeting, saving, and credit management.  WIBW

  • Today, the University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka started using a new robotic bronchoscopy system called Ion to check deep into the lungs and find very small nodules when lung cancer is more treatable—this system was developed by Intuitive and can reach areas that standard tools cannot.  WIBW
