- ➤ The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library reopened its Kids Library on Thursday morning — a new space filled with a climbing wall, aquarium, and imaginative play station that thrilled children and eased parents' visits as speeches and a ribbon cutting marked the event. - ➤ A Topeka family reported that new video from May 15 shows 25-year-old Kaden Zubler walking along Topeka Blvd north of NW Morse St at 8:10 p.m.—he was seen in a red shirt, jeans, red UA shoes, and eyeglasses—while authorities and his family ask anyone with footage to help locate him as a $5000 reward is offered. - ➤ On May 23, in the 1500 block of S.W. 24th Street in west-central Topeka, Dustin Christopher Kuney, 33, fired his handgun at officers responding to a domestic call before surrendering after multiple officers returned fire — he now faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated domestic battery, and domestic battery while held on bonds totaling $257,500 with no injuries reported. - ➤ Kansas satanist leader Michael Stewart held a black mass protest at the Statehouse on March 28 that led to clashes with Catholics and arrests, but Shawnee County prosecutors will not pursue charges—Stewart is planning an early August nighttime demonstration on the south lawn inviting Wiccans, pagans and others. - ➤ A 33-year-old Topeka man was charged by prosecutors after he engaged in a shootout with police on May 23 when officers responded to a domestic violence call in the 1500 block of Southwest 24th Street—he faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated domestic battery, and domestic battery. - ➤ Crews from Bettis Asphalt and Construction Company will close the Branner Bridge in Oakland on June 2 for about 110 days to replace pavement, approach slabs, abutments and pier expansion joints along Branner Street between SE 3rd Street and about 260 feet north of NE Atchison Avenue (the project is budgeted at $824,463). Several bus stops will pause service during the work. WIBW
- ➤ Work crews will close the Branner Bridge in the Oakland neighborhood on Monday, June 2 for repairs that will last about 110 days — drivers must use detour routes as the project replaces pavement and updates bridge structures. KSNT
