  • Doorstep celebrates 60 years (A Calm in the Storm) at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th St, on Saturday, June 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can join the Neighbor Helping Neighbor 5K, view a car show, and explore a Touch-A-Truck exhibit featuring Twister Truck pickup.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed a proclamation Friday naming today as Gilbert Baker Day to honor the Parsons native who created the rainbow flag; local activists and PFLAG leaders gathered at the Statehouse to mark the event (celebrating his enduring legacy).  Kansas Reflector
  • Juneteenth celebrations began yesterday at the state capitol with a National Flag Raising and Unity Walk — part of a month-long series that includes a Gospel Concert on June 14 and a downtown parade on June 19. Topeka Family and Friends Juneteenth invites everyone to join the festivities.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • USD 501 began its summer meal program on June 1, offering free breakfast and lunch to anyone under 18 at several school sites; those over 19 may buy meals for $5 at select locations (the program targets areas with less food access).  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • GraceMed said its Highland Park Family Clinic at 2040 S.E. California Ave. will see its last day of patient services on Tuesday, June 9 and complete its closure on Friday, June 12 — with patients moved to its Capitol Family Clinic at 1400 S.W. Huntoon St.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Topeka native NiJa Canady pitched a complete game shutout for Texas Tech on Monday night to secure a 2-0 win over Alabama, and the team will face Texas in the WCWS finals with Game 1 starting Wednesday at Devon Stadium.  WIBW
