COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A.B.A.T.E bikers held their 33rd-annual Rescue Ride yesterday to raise funds for the Topeka Rescue Mission+ which helps people in recovery. They finished the ride at Ozawkie American Legion Post 225+ where riders ate and took photos to celebrate the cause.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Police Department held an educational session at Crestview Community Center where officers explained traffic stops to young people aged 14 to 21 and their parents — they also conducted a mock stop to show proper procedures. The next session will take place at the Law Enforcement Center on July 19.  WIBW
  • On June 22, K-9 teams from Shawnee County Sheriff, Lawrence Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Overland Park Police Department displayed their skills in barrier jump, spring and tunnel run, and vehicle extraction events at Domer Livestock Arena during the free K-9 Games—sponsored by Special Olympics Kansas with Melissa Brunner as emcee. Citizens saw the dogs perform and had the chance to touch them.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two Hiawatha homeowners sustained minor injuries after escaping a structure fire on Sunday afternoon at a home on the 600 block of Hiawatha St—fire crews from multiple local and county agencies responded promptly—and the homeowners were treated for cuts and smoke inhalation before being released.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, families gathered at St. John's AME Church for the annual Juneteenth Gospel Extravaganza where ten gospel performances united church groups in celebration of history. A taco celebration wraps up the festive week today.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Jerry Moran said U.S. bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base struck Iran preemptively after intelligence showed Iran could build a nuclear bomb—he added that he is headed to a top-secret briefing in Washington today and will update authorities if any threat to Kansas installations like Fort Riley emerges. Moran stressed that while the action was a response to Iran's refusal of inspections, there is no immediate danger for local communities.  KSNT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Players competed in the pool tournament Sunday, June 22 at the Maner Conference Center where the air conditioning was off and the heat made playing conditions difficult. Organizers said it was the third time the AC had failed – staff tried to keep players cool despite dehydration and forfeited matches.  WIBW
