COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The YMCA of Topeka said Tuesday, June 24, that it will move its childcare program from the Crossroads facility to Trinity Presbyterian Church this summer—its last day at Crossroads is August 1 and programming will resume on August 4 with all staff and participants transitioning to the new site. - ➤ The Capitol Federal Foundation donated $10,000 to Special Olympics Kansas on Tuesday, June 24 at its Capitol Federal Home Office branch—raising its total giving to $100 million since 1999. WIBW
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Prosecutors in Shawnee County filed murder charges against 33-year-old Julian B. Vann and 30-year-old Damian L. Lewis for their alleged role in killing 32-year-old Jessie L. Grahnert from Topeka last year, — charges include first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling — after they were arrested on June 17 following a Nov. 24, 2024 shooting. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, the City of Topeka’s Water Department visited Monday, June 23 to show kids how to keep the oceans clean by teaching them proper recycling and waste disposal—staff emphasized the need to keep hazardous chemicals out of landfills. KSNT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Topeka approved downtown parking changes at its June 10 meeting and set new rates and rules to take effect September 1, which include higher monthly fees, doubled 10-hour meter rates, and replacing yellow hoods on Kansas Ave with 2-hour metered parking. Parking officials plan to use outreach and updated signage & online resources to help visitors understand the revised system. WIBW
- ➤ Topeka City Council updated downtown parking rates on June 24 to simplify the parking system and fund infrastructure improvements—monthly garage rates will rise from $67.75 to $74 and meter rates will increase from $0.50 to $1 per hour, with changes starting Sept 1 and additional modifications on Jan 1 while free parking on Kansas Avenue remains with a two-hour limit. - ➤ Local residents and business owners oppose plans to build a new fueling station and truck stop on the old Holidome site along Southwest Fairlawn Road, fearing increased traffic and negative impacts on nearby MacLennan Park. The City Council will review the proposal on July 1—community members plan to speak out at the meeting. KSNT
