  • Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka received the Otto Jane Schnellbacher Lifetime Achievement Award at Wednesday night’s Cornerstone of Topeka housewarming party fundraiser—recognizing its two-decade support for transitional housing—and awarded Cornerstone two grants totaling 1.25 million dollars to rehabilitate 70 homes.  WIBW
  • Locals in northeast Kansas can enjoy several firework shows planned for Independence Day events as Wamego hosts Boomtown USA on July 4—featuring activities like a parade, carnival and evening fireworks—and Topeka presents the Spirit of Kansas event with car shows, golf tournaments and its own display. Community celebrations also include multi-day family events in St. Marys and Freedom Fest in Junction City that offer parades, sports and music.  KSNT
  • Tap That Topeka returns on Sept. 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. at SW 8th & Jackson outside Celtic Fox. The festival will feature local beers & seltzers and a free after-party with live music.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Two former fugitives—Desiree Kristel Shopteese of Topeka and Lloyd Allan Wabaunsee of Mayetta—were arrested again in Jackson County on Tuesday, June 24 after a deputy tried to stop a 2007 Cadillac, sparking a 10-minute chase that ended with Shopteese taken at the scene and Wabaunsee caught later following a multi-agency manhunt.  WIBW
  • Authorities are searching for missing teen Azra Cobuluis, 16, from Topeka after she was last seen on June 18 between 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.—she is 5 ft 7 in tall, has red hair, blue eyes and black framed eyeglasses, and suffers from severe grand mal seizures and depression without her medication.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Shawnee County Historical Society will lead a historical tour of Dover landmarks beginning at 3 p.m. on June 28 at Sommerset Cafe (5701 SW Douglas Rd) and continuing to Sage Inn where visitors will learn local history; nonmembers pay $10 while members join free and reservations are required.  WIBW

  • Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson announced his bid for reelection yesterday at the annual Bob Dole Dinner and highlighted his record in managing state funds—which includes a sweep account that generated $9.9 million in interest—and vowed to protect the state's $50 billion in assets if re-elected.  WIBW
