ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews responded to a blaze at a former Menninger building on the 5800 block of S.W. 6th Avenue in west Topeka Thursday morning—smoke was seen on site and no injuries were reported.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Law enforcement ended a manhunt after arresting a primary suspect following a June 26 high-speed chase along I-70 near McDowell Creek Road east of Junction City—officials halted the search for two other dangerous suspects due to thick terrain.  KSNT
  • A 9-year-old boy reported missing Wednesday morning was found in west Topeka when the sheriff's office used new camera technology — with alert citizens guiding authorities — to safely reunite him with his family.  WIBW
  • A Topeka man, Wesley Reel Bennett, 23, was indicted for allegedly assaulting and seriously injuring a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation on Tribal land in June; the FBI + Tribal Police are investigating the case.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Thursday, AAA reported that unleaded gas averaged $2.91 a gallon in Topeka—up from $2.89 a week earlier—while diesel prices rose by 13 cents to $3.45 a gallon. Nearly 700,000 Kansans planned to travel over the Fourth of July weekend, joining more than 72 million Americans taking trips nationwide.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Topeka Public Schools held summer camps where 3rd to 5th graders built a miniature treehouse — a hands-on project to learn planning and creation — and kindergarteners and 1st graders practiced basic coding and robotics with Legos. Tomorrow students will test the treehouses for structural soundness to ensure safe designs.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kansas transportation officials announced that westbound I-70 in downtown Topeka will be closed Saturday, June 28 from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. for lane shift work on the Polk-Quincy Viaduct project + drivers are advised to use detour routes via I-470, U.S. 75, and K-4. Officials also recommended following a local detour from 10th Avenue to Topeka Boulevard + Sixth and MacVicar Avenues for westbound traffic.  KSNT
