COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ASEZ WAO, part of the World Mission Society Church of God, organized a cleanup at Shunga Park on Sunday despite rain—volunteers from as far away as St. Louis joined the local effort that added to nearly 8,800 global cleanup events. Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Superintendent Eric van Becelaere said the event showed the community's strong commitment.  WIBW
  • The Topeka High School chimes rang Sunday, June 29 as the community gathered in front of the school for its annual Patriotic Chimes Concert. THS alum Jerry Anderson played 27 patriotic songs with a small keyboard attached to the historic chimes (installed in the 1930s) and said he will continue the tradition in future concerts.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach sent a letter to the State Board of Education urging a change in the contracts for Child Nutrition and Wellness Programs — he said current language on sex discrimination conflicts with federal law and a recent court ruling.  WIBW
