After Fourth of July fireworks spooked many dogs, Helping Hands Humane Society collected 36 lost dogs and 24 lost cats and is now housing 48 stray animals, noting that they typically receive about 10 strays a day but see more on busy days.

The shelter advises owners to microchip their pets and will offer free microchipping on August 2 (4-8 p.m.).
