  • After Fourth of July fireworks spooked many dogs, Helping Hands Humane Society collected 36 lost dogs and 24 lost cats and is now housing 48 stray animals, noting that they typically receive about 10 strays a day but see more on busy days. The shelter advises owners to microchip their pets and will offer free microchipping on August 2 (4-8 p.m.).  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On July 4, a woman cyclist was taken by ambulance to a local hospital after a vehicle struck her at 30th and SE California — her injuries were not life-threatening and the driver was unharmed.  WIBW

  • For July, Topeka Art Guild is featuring Lisa LaRue-Baker’s artwork that highlights her Native American heritage—she uses recycled materials to create traditional baskets and a striking U.S. outline with holes representing Native American reservations—to educate viewers about the region's rich history.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from seven Kansas schools earned the Kansas Agriculture Skills and Competencies certificate from the Kansas Department of Agriculture after completing classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience (SAE), and FFA requirements. Forty-three students met strict GPA and performance standards to earn the respected certificate.  WIBW
