COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SENT Topeka’s Southside Filling Station will reopen today at 9 a.m. at 455 SE Gold Park Blvd.—the pantry is now using non-SER volunteers after federal funding delays to help families who missed food pickups last week.  WIBW
  • Today, the Mobile Access Partnership opens a One-Stop Homeless Resource Center at Lets Help Inc. at 245 Southwest MacVicar to give Topeka’s unsheltered population access to essential services— the center serves as the base for the All Hands On Deck campaign to end chronic homelessness.  KSNT

CRIME NEWS

  • Late Sunday, police chased Anthony Austin Weems, 25, in a stolen white Ford F-150 near S.E. 5th and Tefft streets in East Topeka and he fled on foot before officers located him in a nearby residence—he was later booked at Shawnee County Jail on a $25,000 bond.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fiesta Topeka will feature a parade that starts at 10:30 a.m. on July 12 from SW 12th and Jackson and free shuttle rides every 30 minutes from 5:30 p.m. on July 15 to 19 have been set up from the city lot at SE 8th and Madison to help with limited parking in the residential area.  WIBW
  • The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library will host Improv Shenanigans on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Marvin Auditorium, where adults will learn improv techniques and play games — additional Grown-Up Fun events are planned on Fridays and Sundays through August.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Six candidates are running for Topeka mayor with a primary on Aug. 5 to select two who will face off in the Nov. 4 ballot. Spencer Duncan, a native council member from District 8 who visited Eye on NE Kansas on July 7, said he will focus on affordable housing, lowering property taxes, and selling Hotel Topeka—an asset to attract conferences—to help the city recoup its investment.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local hospitals reported injuries from the 4th of July weekend—Stormont Vail Health treated 17 emergency cases and 2 in Express Care with no transfers, while the University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus cared for 4 patients with fireworks-related injuries, with one patient transferred for further treatment.  WIBW
  • Pathways to Oral Health is a new initiative to help Kansans with intellectual and developmental disabilities get dental care. The program — backed by state health officials and KanCare organizations — offers an online tool called My Dental Care Passport and provider support to ease Medicaid processes.  WIBW

  • Former all-American Jaycee Ginter returns to Washburn softball’s coaching staff to assist head coach Brenda Holaday this upcoming season — the standout pitcher recorded 85 wins and 29 losses and 791 strikeouts during her career, graduated in 2024, and now works as a Radiologic Technologist.  WIBW
