COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Topeka has received $162,000 in tax credits from the Kansas Department of Commerce to improve its Adams Clubs Adventure Oasis play area for kids. The funds will boost fundraising efforts and help reimagine the outdoor space.  WIBW
  • Today, Fiesta Topeka begins at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church grounds at 201 NE Chandler in Oakland and will run through July 19 to draw thousands for Mexican food, art, and music—parking is limited. Reser’s Fine Foods sponsors a free shuttle leaving every 30 minutes from the lot at SE 8th & Madison starting at 5:30 p.m.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Topeka Fire Department crews responded Monday morning to a box truck fire in East Topeka on the 1900 block of S.E. Colorado Avenue — further details were not immediately available.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week that wages in Topeka and Manhattan fell below the national average with Topeka at $28.10 per hour and Manhattan at $26.30 compared to $32.66 nationally. In Topeka, the highest-paying jobs were in management, healthcare and computer or math groups while Manhattan’s top wages were in management and legal jobs—food preparation roles paid the least in both areas.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kansas sent its Task Force 1 with two Type 3 swift-water search and rescue teams to Kerrville and Kerr County in Texas after Texas requested help through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact on July 12. Governor Laura Kelly said the teams—comprising rescuers from several local fire departments—will use hard-bottom inflatable boats to support rescue efforts and aid flood victims.  KSNT
  • A ceremony will honor Kansas Army National Guard soldiers of the 130th Field Artillery Brigade on July 31 at 2 p.m. at the Kansas State University Alumni Center in Manhattan— the soldiers, led by Col. Daniel Ball, will deploy to support Operations Spartan Shield and Inherent Resolve and are expected to return in summer 2026.  WIBW
  • The Shawnee County elections department has secured a contract to transport voting machines safely using seals—multi-factor verification and secure cages—that are set to save about $40,000. The contract will support the upcoming city-only election for mayor and council-district one, with in-office voting starting July 21 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Blood Center in Topeka has called for urgent donations of type O-negative and O-positive blood because the supply has dropped sharply after the Fourth of July holiday. The center says the remaining blood is enough for only 1–2 days—donors are needed now to meet rising hospital demands.  WIBW
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas has designated local hospitals as Blue Distinction Centers and Blue Distinction Centers+ for spine surgery and knee and hip replacements, showing these facilities offer safer care with fewer complications. Some centers also report up to 30% cost savings and lower readmissions—benefits that can improve patients’ recovery times.  WIBW
