COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Friends of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library will hold a three-day Book and Media Sale at the library’s Marvin Auditorium from July 18 through 20. The event will include a members-only sale on Friday from 5—8 p.m., a public sale on Saturday from 9 a.m.—3 p.m., and a bag day on Sunday from noon—3 p.m.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • A Shawnee County judge sentenced 27-year-old Topeka resident Mickel Cherry to consecutive life sentences without parole for 25 years Tuesday, July 15th for his 2023 crimes of raping and killing five-year-old Zoey Felix — a verdict that followed his guilty plea and the shock of her fatal injuries after police responded to her medical emergency.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Jazz Workshop will perform modern jazz music at a free concert set for 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27 at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library at 1515 S.W. 10th Ave—local musicians come together from full-time jobs to keep jazz alive.  WIBW
  • Fiesta Topeka kicked off Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Our Lady of Guadalupe church grounds in Oakland — the annual celebration runs until July 19, is expected to draw thousands, and includes food, art, dancing, and a free shuttle service provided by Reser’s Fine Foods.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Topeka said on July 15 that Wichita-based Endeavor Hotel Group sent a Letter of Intent to buy the city-owned Hotel Topeka for $1 million—additional funds will come from CID and TGT over 20 years. The group plans to invest $6 million to rehab the hotel and must secure a long-term management deal for the nearby Maner Conference Center for the deal to move forward.  KSNT
  • Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced Tuesday that a nationwide $720 million settlement was reached with eight drug makers to address the opioid crisis—Kansas will receive about $5.7 million to help fund addiction prevention and treatment programs. The deal stops seven companies from promoting opioid pills and sets strict rules to monitor drug orders while Indivior is barred from selling opioid products for 10 years.  WIBW
