COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Melissa Brunner, longtime 13 News anchor and news director, was inducted into the EMMY Silver Circle by the Heartland Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences — an honor for over 25 years of service in television and the community. The ceremony took place on July 19 in Oklahoma City.  WIBW
  • Evergy reported power outages in northeast Kansas affecting over 1,900 customers in 94 areas (including over 600 in Topeka and Osage County as of 8:25 a.m.). Crews have been assigned and restoration is expected by 9:30 a.m. as they work to identify the cause.  KSNT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews rushed to a two-vehicle collision at S.W. Winding and Wanamaker roads in west Topeka on Monday, July 21st — no injuries have been reported.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was arrested after shots were fired in Eskridge over the weekend and deputies took Justin Case Goodspeed, 36, into custody on Sunday at 8:36 p.m.—no injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Police Department reported one man died and another was injured after a shooting at a gas station in south Topeka at 2:15 a.m. on July 21 — the victim died at a local hospital while the injured man was treated for non-life-threatening wounds — marking the city's 11th homicide of 2025.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Performing Arts Center announced its TPAC Live! 2025-26 inaugural season featuring 7 shows on sale with season bundle offers—discounts range from 8% to 20% for multiple-ticket purchases. Tickets start at $20 and are available at the box office or online.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washburn University will host an enrollment event on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Morgan Hall’s Welcome Center where prospective and returning students who have not registered for Fall classes can complete applications, speak with advisors, and enter scholarship drawings totaling $10,000 — with one drawing awarding up to $4,000.  WIBW
  • Geary County Schools USD 475 announced federal funding changes for the 2025-26 school year that will end before-school care and limit after-school programs—elementary and middle schools will offer targeted tutoring on fewer days while high schools prioritize credit recovery, and additional details will be shared before classes begin.  WIBW
