COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka Rescue Mission is urging neighbors to help unsheltered residents during the heatwave—providing hydration, electrolyte drinks, and cooling supplies while the Street Reach Team conducts wellness checks. The group will activate cooling centers in Shawnee County if temperatures stay above 105°F for two days.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At around 8:48 a.m. Tuesday, Topeka emergency responders arrived at a semitrailer rollover on a ramp connecting eastbound US-24 and northbound US-75 in North Topeka—no serious injuries were reported.  WIBW
  • A semi truck rolled over in North Topeka Tuesday morning on the eastbound US-24 to northbound US-75 highway exit — firefighters and AMR responded with three fire trucks and extra personnel as crews shut the exit.  KSNT

CRIME NEWS

  • Topeka police held a news conference Tuesday at 1 p.m. near the intersection of N.E. Division and Chester Avenues—addressing an Amber Alert for 2-year-old Zabe Mendez who was last seen on July 18 in Oakland. Officials reported that Zabe was found early Tuesday in Mattoon and that 42-year-old suspect Christopher Barnshaw is in custody after two people were found dead at the home.  WIBW
  • A Topeka child involved in an Amber Alert was found safe in Illinois along with the suspect, Christopher Barnshaw—42, who was located around 12:25 p.m. Tuesday in Mattoon—while police reported that a body was discovered at the Oakland home where the abduction took place around 9:58 a.m. Tuesday.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kansas State Department of Education released updated income eligibility guidelines for the Child Nutrition Program after announcing on July 22 that all school districts and many private schools are now part of the National Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. Families who meet income and special criteria may apply anytime and may appeal eligibility decisions through their school district+ proper process.  KSNT
  • The Kansas State Department of Education announced guidelines for free and reduced-price lunches in all public and many private schools for the 2025–26 school year (income limits are set by household size). Application forms are available at school offices (households need to update details if their income or family size changes).  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal court ruled that the 2021 law banning prefilled ballot applications was unconstitutional because Kansas lawmakers meant to restrict free speech. State officials maintained the law was designed to reduce voter confusion, while critics argued it limited voters’ access to information.  Kansas Reflector
