COMMUNITY NEWS

  • John Roberts and Scott Bryant from Topeka Rescue Mission Ministries discussed their upcoming back-to-school supply drive on 27 News this morning—TRM will help 400 students by providing supplies like backpacks, folders, and notebooks, with donations accepted at their distribution center at 401 NW Norris St., operating Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.  KSNT

CRIME NEWS

  • A jury found Kavshun Boykin guilty on four charges in connection with the April 2024 south Topeka shooting that killed Cody Cooper — he remains in custody without bond and awaits a hearing on July 31 — after police linked him to the fatal incident.  KSNT
  • Matt Jennings, a Georgia man, admitted to illegally killing deer in Kansas and featuring his kills on his YouTube hunting show, and he will pay $25,000 in fines and restitution while facing a lifetime ban from hunting in Kansas — his plea deal also requires five years of unsupervised probation, surrender of the illegally taken deer mounts, and retaking a hunter education course.  Kansas Reflector
  • Lorenzo Pattmon III was found guilty by a jury for the August 2024 murder of Kyle Huggins in Topeka—he will remain in custody without bond pending a sentencing hearing later this year.  KSNT
  • A shooting on Thursday in east Topeka injured two people—one in critical but stable condition—and police said they are investigating the incident after receiving a 4:45 a.m. call about a possible motorcycle crash near Southeast Sixth Street and Southeast California Avenue.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Transportation will close parts of US-24 in North Topeka five times on Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for about 15 minutes each while crews move beams at the Soldier Creek bridge — motorists should plan extra travel time and follow flagger directions.  WIBW
  • Eastbound I-70 near downtown Topeka is closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday for pavement patching on the Polk-Quincy Viaduct, affecting the stretch from MacVicar Avenue to the 6th Avenue exit. Motorists should follow posted detour signs — taking routes via I-470 or US-75 and US-24 then east on K-4 — to bypass the work zone.  WIBW

  • Today, top bull riders from Australia, Brazil, Canada and America will compete at Stormont Vail Events Center as part of the Shawnee County Fair. Judd Mortensen said he is hosting the event for the first time and his brother Jaxton Mortensen will ride—bringing thrilling international competition to Topeka.  KSNT
