CRIME NEWS

  • A local ice cream shop near 29th and Croco in Topeka was burglarized late on July 26 when a shattered front door allowed about $300 in cash to be stolen — the shop replaced its door and reopened several hours later.  KSNT
  • Topeka police reported five homicide victims this month, the most in a single month since November, with arrests made in three cases — police chief Chris Vallejo said the department takes the killings very seriously — and urged residents to call with tips on the two unsolved cases.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new AARP report shows that confidence in Social Security has dropped to 36% in 2025 from 43% in 2020—its lowest level since 2010. AARP Kansas state director Glenda DuBoise said Kansans should trust the program as nearly 589,000 depend on it despite growing concerns about future benefits.  WIBW
  • Kansas activists and former athlete Bob Dole helped shape the Americans with Disabilities Act when it was signed on July 26, 1990, and local voices have championed the law's promise for better jobs, transportation & home care over the past 35 years. Today, advocates like Mike Oxford note that grassroots efforts in Kansas helped secure rights for 43 million Americans.  WIBW

  • Stormont Vail Health welcomed board-certified Dr. Christy Bullard as their new nocturnist intensivist — she will oversee care for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit at 1500 S.W. 10th Ave — and she looks forward to working with the team.  WIBW

  • Professional Bull Riders hosted an event at Stormont Vail Events Center on July 26 when elite riders from across the nation tested their skills on powerful bulls+ the fundraiser benefited Shawnee County Fair.  WIBW
  • Kansas high school distance runner Ryin Miller announced on Friday her commitment to join the University of Arkansas & built her record-setting career by winning state titles and breaking a 1600-meter record.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
  • Kansas football coach Lance Leipold said fall camp got off to a strong start on Thursday as transfer players fit in well and some may become captains while the offensive line adjusted for injured Bryce Foster—he noted that the defensive tackles also showed strong depth to support the team. Leipold added that returning players and new additions are competing for starting roles as the Jayhawks build their roster for the season.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
  • Kansas football will hold fall camp practices in David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium before the season opener on Aug. 23; coach Lance Leipold said the team hopes to have a night practice on Aug. 1—stadium logistics will decide if additional sessions occur.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
