COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Special Olympics Kansas is asking community members to volunteer for the state swimming competition on Saturday, August 2 at Capitol Federal Natatorium at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, with team check-in starting at 9:00 a.m. and competition events running from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.—volunteers will assist with tasks like athlete check-in, staging, lane timing, and photography while receiving lunch.  WIBW
  • The City of Topeka will host National Night Out on August 9 from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Agriculture Hall, 1 Expocentre Drive — the free event will feature trucks, a talent show, a resource fair, music, and food to build police-community partnerships. Residents are encouraged to join and enjoy the day of family fun and neighborhood connection.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Salvation Army will host its Back to School Bash on August 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Topeka Salvation Army Corps (1320 SE 6th Ave) to provide hygiene items, haircuts, health screenings, snacks, games, and other services so families can start school with essential support. The free event is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to a pickup truck fire on Tuesday at S.W. 17th and Topeka Boulevard in central Topeka around 8:03 a.m. — no injuries were reported and further details are pending.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee County Elections Commissioner Andrew Howell reminded voters that August 5 primary elections for local offices in Topeka are non-partisan and races need at least four candidates to trigger a vote. Howell also advised voters to return mail ballots by 7 p.m. on election day (advance ballot applications are due by July 29 and in-person advance voting ends at noon on August 4).  WIBW
  • Valley Falls received a $650,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce Tuesday morning & the city will use the funds to fix its sanitary sewer system & the grant is one of 16 awarded to help improve local infrastructure.  WIBW
  • Kansas Task Force 1 returned home on July 27 after a 15-day mission rescuing flood victims in Texas; the 15-member team navigated dangerous waters and worked with K9 units — their work came after Texas requested assistance under a mutual aid compact.  KSNT
  • Topeka Mayor Mike Padilla and City Manager Robert Perez held their monthly news conference Tuesday morning at Holliday Building (620 S.E. Madison St.) as they addressed key city issues at 10:30 a.m.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stormont Vail Health received Blue Distinction recognition from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas for its knee and hip replacement program - a title given to centers that meet strict quality, safety, and recovery standards. The health center earned the designation by achieving low complication and readmission rates and advancing patient recovery practices.  WIBW
