COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka’s former Gage Elementary School hosts a weekend reunion on Aug. 8 and 9 for former students. The schedule includes a Capitol dome tour at 3:15 p.m. on Friday — a familiar field trip experience — and school tours on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. — with an informal gathering at Louie’s Lounge and Skinny’s — followed by a Sunday breakfast at 8 a.m. at IHOP.  WIBW
  • Sole Reason launched its Manhattan program on August 1 in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan—featuring kid-friendly activities and a sneaker giveaway for local youth. The nonprofit, which has given nearly 9,500 pairs of shoes in Topeka, seeks support from local businesses—expanding its efforts to help underserved children.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Goodyear employees rode the iconic blimp Tuesday, August 5, to mark its 100th anniversary and view downtown and the long-running plant; the ride was a special thank-you for 80 years of plant history. The blimp will leave Topeka today at 10 a.m.—heading to Fayetteville on its commemorative cross-country trip.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spencer Duncan and Henry McClure earned 4,456 and 1,057 votes on Aug. 5 and will face each other in November to be Topeka’s next mayor. Mayor Mike Padilla did not seek re-election— the winner will serve a four-year term.  WIBW
  • Karen Hiller and William Naeger advanced to the general election for City Council District 1 after the Aug. 5 primary, where 803 people voted across 18 precincts — the election will be held on Nov. 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
  • The City of Topeka’s Office of Inclusive Communities partnered with the East Topeka Senior Center to offer free transportation for seniors to National Night Out at Agriculture Hall, 1 Expocentre Drive, on August 9 between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Seniors needing rides must call 785-251-6988 to reserve a spot by August 7 as pickups begin at 10:00 a.m.  WIBW
  • Topeka City Attorney Amanda Stanley is resigning effective Sept. 6 — she has held the post since Aug. 23, 2021 — and she worked as a licensed attorney for seven years, including time at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Wichita and the Kansas Court of Appeals.  WIBW
  • AmeriStarRail proposed a new transcontinental train route called The Transcontinental Chief that will run from Los Angeles to New York and stop in Topeka, Garden City, Dodge City, Hutchinson, Newton, Lawrence and Kansas City — the service will offer truckers a place to rest while driving their trailers and will launch on National Train Day, May 10, 2026.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America invites sites worldwide to join its ‘Light the World In Teal’ initiative by lighting buildings teal on November 3 — a campaign to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. More than 1,300 sites from all 50 states and 16 territories have signed up so far — no registration fee is required.  WIBW
