ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to a single-vehicle crash early Monday near 6:38 a.m. on eastbound I-470 near mile marker 5—just east of S.W. Gage Boulevard in south Topeka, with the vehicle remaining upright and no immediate injuries reported.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Clifton Wabaunsee, 44, from Topeka, was arrested on Thursday night near Mayetta after a traffic stop on US-75 for suspected meth and drug-related charges—he was then booked into Jackson County Jail.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Topeka Festival Singers officials announced their 41st season lineup for 2025–26, themed 'Bright Horizon,' with four concerts starting Oct. 13 at White Concert Hall on the Washburn campus. All shows will begin at 7 p.m.—a new early start meant to make concerts more accessible for local audiences.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers at Washburn Rural North Middle School are opening their new building to students today as they express both excitement and back-to-school jitters. They spent the summer preparing updated classrooms with abundant natural light—safety features and facilities that will serve sixth and seventh graders starting today and other students walking the halls tomorrow.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Topeka police will host a community safety forum at Hillcrest Community Center at 1800 Southeast 21st Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 18 where local residents and business owners can learn about current crime statistics and ask about prevention tips — officials say the event is key to improving neighborhood safety.  KSNT
  • Shawnee County commissioners cut $200,000 from the District Attorney’s Office budget and reduced the retirement fund from 75% to 50%—actions taken at their meeting on Monday, Aug. 11 to meet the mill levy cap. They also restored $50,000 for a wage study after reviewing additional budget savings.  KSNT
  • Two years after police raided the Marion County Record on Aug. 11, 2023, owner-editor Eric Meyer said he still works hard on news and is using a lawsuit to make sure police and officials follow the rules. He said the case — which goes beyond asking for money — aims to show that raiding a newsroom is not acceptable.  Kansas Reflector

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach wants to make naloxone kits more available to Kansans and will repurpose unused news racks into naloxone distribution boxes— a $177,000 grant approved Friday will fund advertising and allow placement of boxes on college campuses and at the Hutchinson state fair from Sept. 5 through Sept. 14.  Kansas Reflector
