  • Free food was given on Tuesday morning at Stormont Vail Events Center around 9 a.m., near S.W. 19th Street and Topeka Boulevard; no identification was needed—recipients only provided their last name, zip code, and family size. Sponsors Topeka Turnaround Inc. and Topeka Bible Church organized the giveaway, which ended when supplies ran out around 11 to 11:30 a.m.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Police Department will hold a community safety forum on August 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hillcrest Community Center—1800 SE 21st St.—to share crime statistics, offer prevention tips and gather community feedback.  KSNT
  • Ahman Green, a former Green Bay Packers star, led an esports clinic at the Boys & Girls Club of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation near Mayetta—he used gaming to teach teamwork and thinking skills during his two-day workshop that began yesterday and continues today.  WIBW

  • Topeka native Jennifer Lancaster vanished when she left her apartment with her daughters on May 12, 2000 for a laundromat and her Jeep was later found abandoned—recent TikTok claims by a woman calling herself Monique have reactivated DNA testing led by the Crime Junkie Podcast while local police have not provided an update.  KSNT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washburn University increased its fundraising goal to $300 million from its initial $250 million target when the Forever Washburn campaign launched in November 2024—officials said Tuesday at the Fall Kickoff amid record enrollment, new campus renovations, and strong donor support.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Topeka will start a road construction project on Aug. 18 on Northwest 17th Street near the Sunflower Sports Association that will force drivers onto a five-mile detour using Vail Avenue—Northwest 25th Street and Menoken Road. The project will repair failing concrete panels with asphalt overlay and patching and is expected to take three weeks.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Agencies in Shawnee, Douglas and Lyon counties received Chronic Disease Risk Reduction grants yesterday from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to help lower tobacco use, improve nutrition and boost physical activity—covering 25 counties and nearly two million Kansans. The grants provide funding, training and technical support for evidence-based strategies.  WIBW
