  • Classic cars cruised outside the Dugout Sports Bar and Grill at Hillsdale Shopping Center in a charity car show held by the Topeka Classic Chevy Club; the club said that registration fees from about 60 cars will fund goods for the VA before Christmas—bringing joy to veterans.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • QuikTrip confirmed a new gas station — a 6,300 square foot store with a full-service QT Kitchen — will begin construction at I-470 and Topeka Boulevard in South Topeka at the beginning of next year and open in fall. The store will offer grab-and-go meals, snacks, beverage stations, restrooms and three diesel bays with space for 16 cars.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Living the Dream Inc. held its first So Soul Summer event to honor Dr. Martin Luther King — people wore bright colors and the fundraiser raised money to award 20 to 35 one-thousand-dollar scholarships for seniors in Topeka. Fundraiser chair John Nave said the night marked the start of a new effort that honors the late founders Jackie and Robert Bugg.  WIBW
  • Ms. Wheelchair Kansas competitor Autumn Green joined 27 News this morning as she prepares for the Ms. Wheelchair America 2026 pageant; the KU alum and founder of AbilityKU will compete in Grand Rapids from August 18th through 24th — using her platform to promote disability advocacy.  KSNT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sen. Renee Erickson pressed State Board of Education member Jim Porter on Thursday—challenging him to name the task force members he claimed criticized public schools over using the high school graduation rate as a measure of success. Porter, a retired superintendent who supports virtual educators for boosting graduation rates, stood by his comments without naming any colleagues.  Kansas Reflector
  • USD 501 students signed on for the TCALC Youth Teacher Apprenticeship Program yesterday (a partnership with Washburn University and KSDE that offers hands-on classroom experience and a path to earn an associate’s degree in education) as they commit to a two-year teacher training pathway at local schools.  WIBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Texas federal court ruled Tuesday that the lesser prairie chicken lost its federal protections after a Biden-era decision listed it as endangered, a change welcomed by local agricultural and energy groups. Over 70% of the bird’s population lives in Kansas — and voluntary conservation programs are set to help lessen short-term impacts.  Kansas Reflector

  • The Topeka Police Department will join a statewide Labor Day drunk driving enforcement campaign called You Drink. You Drive. You Lose starting today until Sept. 1—efforts supported by a KDOT grant aim to reduce impaired driving by urging those who drink to choose a safe ride or designate a sober driver.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dollar General is recalling Clover Valley Instant Coffee sold between July 9—21 for possible glass pieces that may injure teeth or cut the mouth—injuries that could include serious internal damage. The company is investigating the source of contamination and advises customers in Kansas and 47 other states to contact them with any concerns.  KSNT
