ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A pedestrian was struck and sent to the hospital on Monday, Aug. 25 near 10th and Washburn Avenue — police said the injury severity remains unknown. WIBW
- ➤ A motorcycle crash occurred Monday morning at S.W. 17th Street and Wanamaker Road in west Topeka — officials had no immediate word on injuries. WIBW
- ➤ Police closed the intersection at Southwest Washburn Avenue and Southwest 10th Street in central Topeka on Aug. 25 after a juvenile was hit by a vehicle — first responders arrived and the injured teen is stable. KSNT

- ➤ On Friday, Aug.22, a Shawnee County deputy stopped a white 2020 Dodge Charger near NW Grant Street and NW Jackson Street and arrested Topeka resident Rachael Ratzloff, 27, for drug possession and expired registration charges — the investigation remains ongoing. WIBW
- ➤ On Monday, Aug 18, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office arrested two Topeka residents after a traffic stop on NE Poplar Street revealed a mismatched license plate, a defective windshield, multiple warrants, illegal narcotics, and two firearms — the investigation is ongoing. WIBW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A new biography by historian Caleb Gayle details Edward McCabe’s role in founding Nicodemus—a town established in 1877 by African Americans formerly enslaved. The book, titled Black Moses: A Saga of Ambition and the Fight for a Black State, offers insight into Nicodemus as an oasis for Black Americans. Kansas Public Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two new rentable cabins are coming to Lake Shawnee as Shawnee County Parks and Recreation received approval from the County Commission on Monday morning—this nearly $300,000 project will be funded half by a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and half by the Campground Revolving Fund. WIBW
- ➤ The City of Topeka will begin improvements on Topeka Boulevard on Tuesday, Sept. 2 from 15th to 21st Street—replacing storm sewers and water mains, installing new sidewalks and ADA ramps, and updating the 17th Street intersection as part of a multi-year plan until December 2026. Contractors will keep through traffic operating while commuters may experience slower travel during peak hours. WIBW
- ➤ Shawnee County commissioners approved construction of two 800-square-foot cabins at Lake Shawnee on Monday—each cabin will have a bathroom and small kitchen and cost $297,979 with half of its funds coming from a KDWP grant. They also approved a $1,820,642 bid for a multi-culvert replacement project on Southeast Berryton Road set to start early next year before school resumes. KSNT
