COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Club of Topeka announced its 10th annual Stuff the Bus drive this summer raised over $25,000—$7,770 in cash and $17,390 in supplies—breaking previous records. The program has gathered more than $167,000 in total since it began and will supply school materials to local students.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County Parks and Recreation will host the second annual Gage Park Founder’s Fest on Aug.29 and Aug.30, offering free activities such as the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center free day, mini-train rides, and a history program at Helen Hocker Theater—free zoo admission, concerts, and community events will follow on Sunday.  KSNT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle fire occurred Tuesday morning near N.W. 66th and US-75—Soldier Township Fire Department crews arrived at 7:21 a.m.—with no injuries or damage reported.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash — police were called at 6:57 a.m. on August 26th at Southwest 29th Street and Southwest Villa West Drive, and at least one person was injured though no serious injuries were reported.  KSNT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washburn Tech held a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday at its new North Topeka campus at 2240 NW Tyler St.—the building will train students for careers in manufacturing, cosmetology, and automotive fields. Leaders said construction will finish in time for classes in Fall 2026, allowing the college to expand its programs across campuses.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kansas officials rejected federal requests for SNAP data because state rules protect residents' private details—lawmakers and officials have continued to challenge the misuse of such information in lawsuits and legislative meetings. Leaders at the Department for Children and Families, including Laura Howard, stated that current fraud checks already use the necessary data to safeguard the program.  Kansas Reflector
  • Shawnee County commissioners approved new cabins at Lake Shawnee campgrounds during an Aug. 25 meeting. The 800-square-foot cabins with two bedrooms, one bathroom and a small kitchen will feature a water-facing deck and are planned to start by spring — they will be built with a 50/50 grant from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and matching county funds.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
  • At the latest city council meeting in Topeka, members approved a measure that lets property taxes rise to 36.956 mills—leaving many residents worried about higher costs on fixed incomes. The final budget vote will come in September after further review of spending and city salaries.  WIBW
  • KDOT is replacing pavement on a 4-mile stretch of I-70 through Junction City from Washington Street at Exit 296 to K-57 at Exit 300 and warns that delays will occur—especially on weekends when K-State home games are held—due to one-lane restrictions on the westbound side and lower work zone speed limits; the project is set to finish by December, conditions permitting.  WIBW
