COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Many Topeka businesses, schools and offices will close for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1, but some stores and restaurants will remain open for shopping and dining. 27 News checked with local venues — including West Ridge Mall and Culver’s — to confirm their hours so residents can plan their day.  KSNT
  • Topeka’s 30th annual Sertoma Great Topeka Duck Race will happen on Sept. 13 with over 10,000 rubber ducks competing for prizes while proceeds help local charities—organizers say the event has supported the community for 30 years.  KSNT
  • Kansas Children's Discovery Center started the Gage Park Founders Festival on Friday, August 29, and the event continues today at Gage Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—families can enjoy free admission to the Topeka Zoo with a food donation, mini train and carousel rides, and live music at the amphitheater.  WIBW
  • Reverend Raymond and Pamela Berry have served Gethsemane Worship Center in North Topeka for over three decades while also working full-time; they continue to support their community with outreach programs in prisons, nursing homes, rescue missions, and local schools.  WIBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Troopers responded at 7:03 a.m. on Aug 29th to a crash on the Kansas Turnpike near mile marker 184 east of Topeka near Tecumseh—one vehicle left the highway and went into a ditch as officials warned that foggy weather may have led to lane reductions.  KSNT

CRIME NEWS

  • A Douglas County woman pleaded guilty to insurance fraud on Aug. 28 and was sentenced on Aug. 29 to 12 months probation—she faces a 10-month prison sentence if she violates probation, the Kansas Department of Insurance said fraud raises premiums for all Kansans.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Topeka announced new leadership appointments on Aug.29 when Alicia Guerrero-Chavez, who served as interim human resources director since April, officially assumed the role—she had also worked as an internal investigator. Nick Jefferson was named interim city attorney and will begin his new job on Sept.6—he has led the city's litigation defense for nearly a decade.  WIBW
  • State transportation officials reported that 9,000 work hours have been logged in the seven months since work began on the Polk-Quincy Viaduct and that drivers will gain safer travel plus easier access to the North Topeka Arts District and riverfront when the project is completed in 2027. KDOT said I-70 will be closed for six months starting in late spring next year to help complete the $239 million project on schedule.  KSNT
  • The City of Topeka named Nick Jefferson interim city attorney after former attorney Amanda Stanley left—Jefferson, the chief of litigation with over a decade of experience, will take office Sept. 6.  KSNT

  • Washburn football head coach Zach Watkins said his team has embraced the 'Be the Standard' motto by selecting leaders to wear numbers 0-9 that show players set high standards for play, academics, and community service. He explained that the method clearly defines each player’s role both on the field and off it.  KSNT
