COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka Rescue Mission held its third annual night of praise Friday night at Fellowship Bible Church where local bands led worship and shared heartfelt testimonies — guests also brought canned and non-perishable food donations.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Sept. 9, a bicyclist riding on the Landon Trail was attacked by three dogs from a nearby homeless camp and received stitches while the Kaw Valley Bicycle Club said Animal Control removed one dog—club member Lynn Cress urged more patrols for safety.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • KWCH and WIBW will debut Kansas Now at 9 a.m. weekdays starting Sept. 15—anchored by Annette Lawless and Max Dutton, the new show will focus on important Kansas stories and local weather forecasts. It will also include unscripted segments and special reports from the stations to keep viewers informed.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kansas School for the Deaf is struggling to hire specialized teachers because no Kansas college offers a bachelor’s degree in deaf education and low state salaries make it hard to bring in qualified staff. A task force met Thursday and recommended easing licensing rules—like awarding certificates after specialized courses—and subsidizing tuition to help fill the teacher gap.  Kansas Reflector

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kansas wildlife officials said dead fish have been found in local ponds due to a summer-to-fall transition that causes water layers to mix and drop oxygen as bacteria multiply. They advise pond owners to wait a few weeks before restocking if a fish kill occurs.  KSNT
  • Monarch butterflies are flying south and local groups are clearing invasive honeysuckle and planting milkweed so the migrating insects can thrive. Top City Trails Alliance will host a park cleanup at Skyline Park today at 8 a.m.—a community effort to support native habitats.  KSNT

  • Governor Laura Kelly directed flags to be flown at half-staff across Kansas in remembrance of victims of political violence (including Charlie Kirk and Melissa Hortman) effective Friday until sundown Sunday, September 14.  WIBW
  • Kansas Governor Laura Kelly ordered flags to fly at half-staff from Sept 12 to Sept 14 to honor victims of political violence. She said the order honors people like Charlie Kirk and Melissa Hortman — urging a move away from dangerous rhetoric.  KSNT
  • Topeka Metro lost a large funding source and will cut services effective Dec. 7 — the agency invites community feedback at public meetings on Sept. 27 at Deer Creek Community Center and Oct. 4 at Quincy Street Station.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County Commissioners filed a lawsuit on Sept. 12 over unpaid City of Topeka special assessments for several vacant lots in southwest Topeka—seeking a judicial tax foreclosure process that may result in a public tax sale within six months if obligations remain unresolved.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Protein foods are appearing on grocery shelves as experts say they help control blood sugar and keep you full; however, some items add too much sugar. Nutrition expert Amber Groeling—of Stormont-Vail Health—and Washburn University trainer Kristan Todd urged shoppers to read labels carefully.  WIBW

  • Kansas football announced on Sept 11 that the home game against Cincinnati on Sept 27 is sold out—marking the team's second sellout after a season opener at Fresno State.
