  • Carrie Greenwood, who has used a wheelchair since birth, created Ms. Wheelchair Kansas in 2004 to provide young women with a role model and now leads the Kansas Youth Empowerment Academy to boost youth with disabilities — showing that extra challenges do not limit achievement. Her work motivates local students to see that they can set and reach goals.  WIBW
  • Vietnam War veterans in Northeast Kansas were honored Monday evening with gold pins recognizing their service at a ceremony held at Westside Baptist Church—about 20 veterans received the pin to thank them for defending our freedoms. Local chapters of Disabled American Veterans Topeka and the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution organized the event to acknowledge a thank you these veterans rarely received when they returned home.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kimberly Reynolds will take over as Commissioner of Aging Services for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services on Sept. 29—she brings over 30 years of experience in aging, behavioral health, and public service to support older Kansans.  WIBW
  • Attorney General Kris Kobach said Kansas lost $10.4 million in SNAP funds after Governor Laura Kelly did not send the required recipient data to the USDA. The USDA will stop future payments every three months—forcing low-income families to face a funding gap until the state complies.  WIBW
  • Kansas met eight obligations in the 2024 McIntyre Settlement status report on foster care, showing improved placement stability and mental health screenings — though challenges remain with placement failures in Wichita. DCF officials meet monthly with partners to review metrics and plan next steps to improve services for youth.  WIBW
  • Kansas officials spoke at the Topeka Zoo today during National Child Passenger Safety Week to remind families that proper car seats and booster seats keep children safer in vehicles. They added that parents should ask for help installing seats—ensuring that kids are securely restrained.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County approved proposals for the maintenance of the Maple Hill Bridge at a Sept. 22 meeting when SNCO Public Works director Curt Niehaus was allowed to request bids for deck work and painting. He said work will begin in 2027 and could last two years—first with a complete closure and then lane closures.  WIBW
  • Shawnee County Commissioners approved the 2026 county budget on Sept. 22 for $151,668,965, which is over $6 million more than last year's and will raise the property tax mill levy to 48.917 — a 0.591 increase that means a slight tax rise for homeowners. Extra funds were added to Parks and Recreation and the County Counselor’s Office to support a lobbyist during legislative sessions.  The Topeka Capital-Journal
  • The Kansas governor’s chief of staff said Monday that a plan to withhold $10 million from the SNAP program was delayed as the state filed an appeal so recipients were not affected—highlighting a dispute over sharing personal data. Attorney General Kris Kobach claimed essential data should be released, but officials said the program would continue normally as the appeal proceeds.  Kansas Reflector
