COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the Topeka Zoo, a cheetah named Leopold was euthanized after a CT scan on Sept. 21 revealed irreparable spine damage following a limp first noted on Sept. 18—zoo officials said they will modify his outdoor enclosure.  WIBW
  • An organizer in Topeka is hosting the Cruisn’ for a Cause car show at the Dugout on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to raise funds for custom-fitted bullet- and stab-proof vests for K-9 officers, which cost around $2,200 each — community raffle entries, door prizes and live music from DJ Rainbow Dragon Mobile add to the event.  KSNT
  • Topeka’s Arab Shriners are hosting a series of fall events at the Arab Shrine, 1305 S. Kansas Ave, including the 19th Annual Wine Tasting on Sept. 27 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with a $30 fee and the 10th annual car show on Oct. 11 with registration at 10 a.m.; the Arab Shrine Ladies will hold UFO Craft Day on Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a $20 fee that includes lunch.  WIBW
  • The Topeka chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management hosted a career fair on Wednesday at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library to help job seekers practice interviews, get resume help, and use a career closet—local employers joined to offer extra resources for finding jobs.  WIBW
  • Nevada-based charity Dream Flights gave eight veterans, including 100-year-old Navy veteran Slyvester Lira—of Brookside Assisted Living—a chance to fly a WWII era Boeing Stearman Biplane at Phillip Billard Airport on Wednesday. Each veteran received a handshake, ballcap and a chance to sign the plane’s tail—an honor showing thanks for their service—while Dream Flights relies on donations and volunteers to offer free rides nationwide.  KSNT
  • Jeremy Graber — partner-in-charge for Foulston Siefkin LLP — received the 2025 Distinguished Partner in Philanthropy Award from the Topeka Community Foundation at the Topeka Country Club on Sept. 24 for his longstanding support of local community organizations. He has been recognized for his active roles with groups like The Greater Topeka Partnership and Downtown Topeka, Inc., showing his commitment to bettering the city.  WIBW
  • Topeka Zoo announced that its annual Love Your Zoo Giving Day will take place on Oct. 2 to raise $25,000 in a 24-hour community challenge, with a donor matching 50% of donations up to $13,000. Donations and Tiger Brick purchases—costing $100 for a 4x8 brick or $250 for an 8x8—will support animal care, education programs and conservation while Tiger Trails and Den Academy are planned to open in summer 2026.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Build A Buddy Factory will leave West Ridge Mall after eight years and move to Legends shopping center in Kansas City because of ongoing maintenance issues—damages. Its last day will be Oct. 4 and the store will hold an $8 discount sale to thank Topeka customers.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Symphony begins its season on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at White Concert Hall—its program features Don Juan, the Topeka premiere of Umoja, and a Tchaikovsky concerto by guest pianist Vitaly Starikov.  WIBW
  • Washburn University's Mulvane Art Museum is hosting the new exhibit 'DoPiKa: Reinstate' which features Native American art and historical research through Nov. 15 — a series of events includes a family weekend celebration on Sept. 27, an artist talk on Oct. 3, a basket weaving workshop on Nov. 1, and another artist presentation on Nov. 6.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kansas State University and Cowley County Community College are launching a two-year milling science degree — a compromise after initial opposition to K-State's plan — that lets students apply certificate credits toward the degree. The program will help train workers for milling and food production roles in the industry.  Kansas Reflector
  • Geary County School District Superintendent Reginald Eggleston said on KNST 27 News Morning Show that the district will soon hold community meetings on the Portrait of a Graduate initiative to let parents, staff, and business leaders share ideas for helping students enter the workforce. He added that he is a Superintendent of the Year finalist and the award will be announced on October 6 — a move that reinforces the district’s plans to boost student success.  KSNT

  • Topeka’s Envista Credit Union unveiled its revamped East Branch on Wednesday—its open lobby now features personable teller stations designed to foster connections as explained by Branch Manager Brian Clavijo. The branch is located at 3321 SW 28th Terr.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Laura Kelly requested an extension for federal disaster declarations after storms from Sept. 8 to 10 caused flooding in parts of Kansas. She sent a letter to FEMA asking for extra time until Nov. 9 so counties can complete damage assessments and gather data.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal officials announced that Kroger shrimp are being recalled due to potential cesium-137 contamination from unsanitary processing at a California supplier—customers are urged to discard or return the products, and no illnesses have been reported.  KSNT
