- ➤ The Schirmer family will host Schirmerstock on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 8001 SW Huntoon to raise money for a national organization helping those with Hermansky Pudlak Syndrome+ local musicians including Mike Schirmer and others will perform and food from Vikings Grille will be available, while guests are asked to bring their own seating and snacks. This event marks the fourth year of fundraising that has raised over $60,000 for the HPS Network. WIBW
- ➤ The first annual Kansas Honey Festival will take place at Old Prairie Town on September 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — the event will include honey-making demonstrations, pollination talks and local honey sales with admission set at $3 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. KSNT

- ➤ Donaldson’s Jewelers is set to host a cash-buying event where estate buyers from National Rarities will evaluate watches, gold, coins, art, and more—people can drop off items from Monday, Sept. 29 to Wednesday, Oct. 1 in the North Topeka Arts District. KSNT

- ➤ The Economic Outlook Conference will be held at Washburn University Memorial Union on Oct. 9 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.—local and national experts, including Dr. Paul Byrne, Bob Ross, Sean Tomb and Alex Durante, will share insights on the local and national economy. WIBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library announced free computer classes in October and November at community centers such as Crestview, IBSA-Gil Carter, Oakland, and Shawnee North. The classes cover computer navigation, internet, and smartphone basics + are part of a Digital Opportunities to Connect Kansans grant with local support. WIBW

- ➤ The Kansas Corporation Commission approved a settlement agreement that will let Evergy raise its rates by $128 million starting with the October billing cycle—helping fund the replacement of aging equipment and improve grid reliability. Residential customers using about 900 kWh per month will see a rate increase of roughly $8.47. WIBW
- ➤ Dozens of Gold Star families honored their fallen heroes at the statehouse Thursday morning, with many laying yellow roses at the memorial to remember Ben Morton. Tributes included custom t-shirts and shared remembrances—an event marking 20 years since his sacrifice in Iraq. WIBW
- ➤ Kansas legislators are evaluating changes to the sports gambling tax model—after collecting only about 0.6% of more than $2.7 billion in wagers last fiscal year—before current sportsbook contracts expire in August 2027.
