- ➤ Shawnee Heights High School students will run a haunted corn maze fundraiser at Shively Farms in Berryton this Halloween weekend to raise funds for their orchestra and support future activities—guests can enjoy live music, food trucks, and a kid-friendly maze before the main event. KSNT
- ➤ Neighbors in College Hill are worried about Boswell Square Park’s future as maintenance may revert back to USD 501 in January and they fear it could be sold to a private developer—officials from USD 501 and SNCO Parks & Rec continue to discuss options to secure the area for families. WIBW
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Dillons announced that a senior discount day will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 1—customers aged 55 and over will receive 10% off in-store groceries and everyday essentials, doubling their previous savings without a coupon. WIBW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Capital City Marching Band Festival will be held on Oct. 1 at Yager Stadium at Washburn University—located just east of S.W. 19th Street and MacVicar Avenue—and will feature over 750 students and directors from eight high schools, with sessions starting at 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission supports the Washburn University Marching Band program. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ USD 450 held a town hall meeting Monday evening where district leaders explained a proposed $65 million bond to update older school buildings and improve safety—if approved by voters in November, renovations will finish in three years and sixth graders will move to the middle school. The district plans a second town hall on October 14 to address more questions. WIBW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Sierra Club report stated that Kansas utility Evergy received an F for its multi-year backslide in renewable investments and its decision to delay closing a coal plant while planning new natural gas plants. Evergy is also exploring a nuclear project with TerraPower—this reflects a national trend of increased fossil fuel reliance that raises climate and cost concerns. Kansas Reflector

- ➤ Topeka voters met with candidates on Monday night at the local library to ask questions ahead of the November 4 election. The event, hosted by the League of Women Voters and Topeka Voter Collaborative, offered residents direct dialogue with candidates running for mayor and city council — clarifying plans for local government. - ➤ Shawnee County Commission approved a five-year partnership with Beacon Events to manage booking, ticketing, marketing — and food sales for events at Great Overland Station, which will begin Oct. 1, 2025. WIBW
- ➤ The City of Topeka released the second episode of its History of Topeka docuseries that tells the story of the early police department—detailing shipping challenges and the inclusion of African-American and female officers. The episode shows how these efforts helped shape the modern force. KSNT
- ➤ Shawnee County Parks & Recreation is considering hiring Landworks Studios to update its master plan for Gage Park, and the county board has delayed its decision until it learns more about the firm’s services and prices. One commissioner said he might vote against the proposal because its cost of 258,000 dollars is more than needed. WIBW
