ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Residents in southwest Topeka had their basements flooded with sewage on Tuesday after nearby construction caused a sewer line backup—ruining belongings and upsetting families. The city said it has resolved the issue but many affected residents remain frustrated.  KSNT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Prairie Band, LLC held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 30 for a new 12,000 square foot travel plaza and truck stop on US Highway 75 at the 150th Road off-ramp in Jackson County; the plaza will include a fueling station, convenience store, dining options and truck amenities + it is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027 and create 30 permanent jobs.  WIBW
  • Tritica Biosciences—based in Wamego—is using wheat germ to produce biologics for vaccines, allergy medications and gene therapies with a faster, sustainable method. The Kansas startup plans to expand its low-cost system to transform how medicines are made.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dania Wahwasuck, a native of Topeka, Kansas, became Miss Indian World after a childhood of dance and strong schoolwork—she now inspires youth and represents indigenous cultures at events in Canada, New York, and California.  KSNT
  • Do Portugal Circus will perform at West Ridge Mall from Oct. 24 to Nov. 2—offering family friendly acts that mix magic, acrobatics and laughter during evening shows from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in a heated tent.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kelly has ordered flags to fly at half-staff Friday, Oct. 3 from sunup to sundown to honor Hays Police Sergeant Scott Heimann who was fatally shot during a domestic violence call on Sept. 28 in Hays.  KSNT
  • The East Topeka Empowerment Coalition will host a candidate forum to help Topeka voters learn about the candidates running in 2025. The event takes place at the National Accord Center on Oct. 15 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.—each candidate will get five minutes to speak and meet voters afterward.  KSNT
  • City workers will begin a road work project on Southeast Sixth Street from Golden Avenue to Rice Road on Oct. 6th to improve the road, the bridge over Deer Creek, and the intersection with Golden Avenue — traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction — as the work wraps up in four phases by fall 2026.  KSNT
  • The Kansas State Association of Fire Chiefs accepts nominations for the Tom McGaughley Fire Service Award until Oct. 10—recognizing acts of heroism—while nominations for State Fire Chief of the Year closed Sept. 30.  KSNT
  • Workers on the Polk-Quincy Viaduct project are shifting to more night shifts because earlier sunsets affect construction on the aging bridge in downtown Topeka. Motorists are advised to drive carefully — I-70 traffic is limited to one lane near the work zone.  WIBW
  • On Sept. 30, the Kansas District Court dismissed Kris Kobach’s SNAP lawsuit after Gov. Kelly’s office argued there was no loss of food assistance funds; Kobach (considering an appeal) claimed false assertions cost needy Kansans $10.4 million, a claim the governor refuted.  WIBW
