COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Volunteers from Town and Country Christian Church served nearly 450 families with almost 38,000 lbs of food on Thursday morning at the Kansas Neurological Institute. The church warned that changes in government funding for Harvesters during the shutdown may affect next month's food distribution — prompting close monitoring. WIBW
- ➤ The Topeka Zoo is hosting a day of giving to raise $25,000 in 24 hours today by asking for donations of all sizes. The funds will help care for the animals and support conservation efforts — it costs nearly $11,000 to feed all the animals for one month. KSNT
- ➤ TFI Family Services held a golf tournament today at Firekeeper Golf Course to raise money for Kansas foster families — proceeds will support sports equipment and clothing needed for children in care. WIBW

- ➤ Topeka's Happy Basset Barrel House launched its Basset Bites kitchen yesterday—its new menu serves food to pair with beers and is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily with extended weekend hours until 10 p.m. at 510 SW 49th St. WIBW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Today, the 21st Annual Slash — Bash film festival starts at The Woodshed in north Topeka with more than 10 horror and sci-fi films, costume contests and movie workshops led by local experts. The event will run from 7 p.m. today until 9:30 p.m. tomorrow. KSNT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday, Topeka schools celebrated their custodians for National Custodian Appreciation Day—students and staff surprised them with gifts and kind notes. The events honored the cleaning teams who kept the schools safe and clean. WIBW
- ➤ Topeka High School has partnered with Envista Federal Credit Union to launch a student-run credit union (Envista Student Branch) that will be managed by students in business and finance classes. The branch will operate four days during lunch and a ribbon cutting is planned for Oct 15. KSNT
- ➤ The Washburn University Music and Theatre Department will host the annual PianoFest on Nov. 1 for piano students from kindergarten to 12 on its campus where they will engage in masterclasses, keyboard workshops, music classes and wellness sessions. The event ends with a free recital by guest artist EunAe Lee at 5 p.m.—students must register by Oct. 26 with fees applied after the Oct. 14 priority deadline. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Kansas Department of Transportation will start a $5.9 million mill and overlay project on K-177 from I-70 to K-18 near Manhattan on Monday, Oct. 6, and it will slow traffic and reduce lanes until early December—crews will work on the southbound lane first and then the northbound lane during daylight hours with the speed limit lowered to 55 mph. This project aims to improve road conditions over an eight-mile stretch with work completed sequentially from one end to the other. KSNT

- ➤ The Shawnee County Health Department will hold a free flu shot drive-through for uninsured adults at Hummer Sports Park’s East Parking Lot on Saturday, Oct. 4 — from noon to 3 p.m. — where adults aged 19 and older can receive a no-cost vaccine and fill out a consent form onsite. KSNT
- ➤ Susan Reynolds explained how her daughter's psychotic break and diagnosis with severe bipolar disorder deeply affected her family and prompted her to help other families facing mental illness. WIBW
- ➤ A recent golf tournament raised $285,000 for the Stormont Vail Foundation’s drive to upgrade the Breast Imaging Center with advanced technology including 3D mammography and AI-enabled imaging. The fundraising effort aims to gather $1 million for a $4 million investment—if successful, the new equipment will be installed by 2027. WIBW
