- ➤ Helping Hands Humane Society will host Bone Appétit 2025 on Oct. 25 at Prairie Band Casino and Resort from 5 to 9 p.m.—the fundraiser will include a gourmet dinner, live music and auctions to raise $110,000 for animal care. KSNT
- ➤ The Miracle Mireya Butterfly Family Festival will take place on Thursday, Oct. 9 at Kansas Children's Discovery Center to honor the memory of a little girl—whose experience with shaken baby syndrome affected her development—and offer free family activities, music, and a silent auction. Kathy and Dan Keck, founders of the Miracle Mireya Foundation, plan to raise awareness of shaken baby syndrome through the event. WIBW
- ➤ Melissa Brunner has worked with WIBW since 1996—serving as news director, co-anchor, and host of Eye on Northeast Kansas—and received the Kansas Association of Broadcasters’ Sonny Slater Award Monday for her long-time service and impact on the Topeka community. WIBW
- ➤ The Shawnee County Crime Stoppers Chili Battle will be held Friday, October 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Washburn’s Lee Arena—local law enforcement teams from the Topeka Police, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Corrections and District Attorney will compete by cooking chili for tasting with tickets costing $10 for adults and $8 for students to raise funds. - ➤ Today marks the two-year anniversary of the deadly October 7 attack in Israel—Temple Beth Sholom Rabbi Sam Stern said Jewish people still feel the pain and seek closure when the hostages return and the war ends. A commemoration will be held at a temple in Overland Park on Thursday. KSNT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Kansas Board of Regents announced that Kansas Apply Free Days begins today and continues through Wednesday, October 8—Kansas residents can apply for undergraduate admissions at any public college or university without an application fee. WIBW
- ➤ Reginal Eggleston, the USD 475 superintendent in Geary County, was named the 2026 Kansas Superintendent of the Year on Oct 6 — and he will join other finalists at a gala on Nov 13 in Wichita for national consideration. KSNT
- ➤ Washburn University honored the top 10 percent of high school seniors from Shawnee County on Oct. 6 at White Concert Hall on its campus. The 201 scholars — from 11 schools — received medallions and certificates to mark their academic achievements. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Laura Kelly will begin an eight-city listening tour on Oct. 9 at Salina South High School at 6 p.m.—she will host town halls in Hays, Garden City, Kansas City, Leawood, Emporia, Pittsburg and Wichita to gather Kansans’ input for her 2026 state budget plan. The tour is aimed at addressing fiscal challenges from past budgets and guiding future spending. Kansas Reflector
- ➤ Topeka’s mayoral race continues as current councilman Spencer Duncan and Henry McClure run for office after Mayor Mike Padilla did not seek reelection—McClure will appear on Eye on Northeast Kansas today while voters must register by October 14 and vote on November 4. WIBW
- ➤ Crews will begin working overnight on eastbound I-70 between MacVicar Avenue and Topeka Boulevard starting Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for about two weeks as part of the Polk-Quincy Viaduct project, and the ramp to 3rd/Monroe Street will close on Monday, Oct. 13 for reconstruction with motorists advised to use alternate routes at 8th Avenue or Adams Street/Branner Trafficway for downtown access.
