COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Capper Foundation was awarded a $1,500 grant by the National Garden Bureau for its accessible garden project, Capper Trail, as part of the 2025 Therapeutic Garden Grant Program. Edie Smith said the funds — given after the foundation received second place nationwide — will be used to enhance the project this fall.  WIBW
  • Residents at White Lakes Plaza Apartments in South Topeka are without dumpsters, leaving trash piled on the ground. District Five Councilman Brett Kell said he will fight for tenants' rights — ensuring landlords are held accountable.  KSNT
  • Advisors Excel partnered with Sheldon Head Start for the ninth year to give 221 preschoolers winter clothes such as coats, shoes, hats — and gloves. Principal Gabrielle Tanner said outdoor play is key in winter — and The Salvation Army will host a coat distribution Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for those still in need.  WIBW
  • Topeka Area Continuity of Care will host its Fall Senior Resource Fair on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center, SW 21st & Fairlawn as over 40 organizations provide care and assistance for seniors.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Topeka human resources professionals will meet on Oct. 16 at the Rose Wood Event Center at 3216 SW 29th St. for the DisruptHR event—featuring nearly a dozen speakers giving five-minute talks on HR topics—and tickets cost $40 for members, $50 for non-members, and $20 for students.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Topeka homeowner at 4th and Western has built a 12-foot skeleton display to spark Halloween spirit in his neighborhood. Paul Pipes said his collection started five years ago and will soon feature audio as Halloween nears — adding extra fun for locals.  KSNT
  • Sara Stepp is the new director of Mulvane Art Museum and she plans to boost community and student engagement by connecting the museum more closely with locals — she noted the museum must serve as a true community asset — while building on its 100th anniversary legacy.  WIBW
  • Retired WIBW general manager Roger Brokke was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame on Oct. 7 for his leadership and the station's many awards. He led WIBW-TV to win 11 consecutive KAB Station of the Year awards—showing his key role in local broadcasting.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Kansas Soybean Commission donated $25,000 to help expand the Port of Houston's soybean export terminal. The commission traveled on Sept. 24 with the Soybean Transportation Coalition and presented a $275,000 check to The Andersons, Inc to enable export capacity for one million tons of soybean meal.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Topeka City Council approved Nov. 12 for a public hearing on a TIF Redevelopment District that will revitalize a 9.12-acre area at the northwest quadrant of Topeka Boulevard and Kansas Avenue. BHI Development plans to build a retail store, a sit-down restaurant, and Topeka’s first Quick Trip — taxes over 20 years will help repay construction costs.  KSNT
  • The Topeka City Council approved the filing of an RHID application on Oct 7—it is the first step to support financing public infrastructure improvements. Windward Estates plans to build 20 duplexes on the southwest corner of 45th and California—developers report economic conditions are delaying the project.  KSNT
  • Topeka’s governing body will vote soon on starting the Sunflower Crossing tax increment financing redevelopment district at Topeka Boulevard and Kansas Avenue as the developer has proposed plans for a convenience store, retail box, and restaurant—plans that may later include a hotel or apartments. The public can add their views at a hearing on November 12.  WIBW
  • Topeka City Council voted to rezone a central lot owned by Calupi Investments to change the plan from 20 units to 12 units—aiming to reduce concerns over crowded, poorly maintained housing. Local leaders worry that higher density could worsen conditions for families and will keep watching how the new plan develops.  KSNT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Reedy family in Topeka has turned their home into a Halloween light show that runs all October. They built each piece by hand—using 73 master props and 5,612 light clubs—and the display runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday at 2838 SE Minnesota Ave.  KSNT
