COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local churches in Topeka will gather on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church for a service of peace, justice & nonviolence that will feature scripture, music and prayer and will raise funds for a local group supporting these causes.  WIBW
  • Officials released final plans on Thursday for a reimagined West Ridge Mall at 1801 S.W. Wanamaker Road in Topeka — the design includes three distinct gateways and the integration of the former Sears space to create a community hub with new indoor and outdoor features.  WIBW
  • The Topeka and Lawrence fire department youth Explorer programs will face off tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the TFD Training Center—324 SE Jefferson—at the second annual Explorer Games where the public is invited to watch the drills and enjoy refreshments after the trophy ceremony.  WIBW
  • Brown’s Tree Service is offering free mulch this weekend — mulch will be given away on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 841 NW Tyler St. in Topeka for residents’ gardening and landscaping needs.  KSNT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SpartanNash will open a new Hispanic grocery store named Supermercado Nuestra Familia at California Crossing Shopping Center in southeast Topeka—its grand opening is set for Dec. 6 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, giveaways and family entertainment. The store will operate daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will hire 100 employees.  KSNT
  • CBD shop owners are preparing legal action after agents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation raided 18 shops — including Sacred Leaf in Topeka — on Oct. 1, and they plan to file an injunction as their businesses face losses from confiscated inventory and reduced operations. Legal experts and store owners are working together to challenge the enforcement actions based on disputed THC percentages in their products.  KSNT

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, the Shawnee County Crime Stoppers Chili Battle will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Washburn University's Lee Arena in Topeka—tickets cost $10 at the door or $8 with student ID.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Festival Singers will kick off their 41st season with the concert ‘Take Flight!’ on Monday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at Washburn University’s White Concert Hall—tickets range from $30 for adults to free for children under 12, and the 43-member group will perform 13 selections from Beatles tunes to a spiritual and Latin song.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials visited White Lakes Plaza Apartments at 3730 SW Plaza Dr.—where residents reported extra trash and cockroaches due to fewer dumpsters and changed upkeep—on Oct 8, and they have opened eight code cases while waiting for a response from the owner.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stormont Vail Health in Topeka earned national accreditation for its nurse residency program that cuts first-year nurse turnover to below 10 percent—providing new nurses with mentorship and hands-on simulation training. The program, now five years in progress, prepares graduates for real-world patient care with direct support from experienced preceptors.  WIBW
  • Kansas health officials confirmed that an invasive Asian longhorned tick was found on a dog in Franklin County and are alerting local veterinarians to watch for the tick—officials say it can spread a dangerous blood parasite that may harm cattle.  KSNT
  • Jeff Whitworth, a K-State Extension Specialist in Entomology, said that brown recluses are the most common indoor spiders in Kansas and hide in garages, basements, and other cluttered places. He noted that even well-kept houses may have between 20 and 30 spiders a year and advised using sticky traps because insecticides mainly kill their food sources — crickets.  KSNT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The final design plans for West Ridge Mall were released on Oct. 9, showing that the former Sears building will add over 121,000 square feet of space for new retail and tenant options—three entrances will provide both indoor and outdoor experiences for local shoppers.  KSNT
