COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cat Association of Topeka will host Hairball 2025 at The Beacon on Oct. 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—this annual fundraiser will feature dinner, auctions, games and grab bags while aiming to raise $10,000 to fund building repairs and updates for their no-kill, volunteer-run shelter.  KSNT
  • Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka is offering free adoption for all pets aged five months and older until Oct. 12 (Thimble is a nine week old kitten whose fee is sponsored after his early health issue was treated).  WIBW
  • The Arab Shriners Ladies group is set to sponsor its annual Purse Bee-ngo event on Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Arab Shrine Temple at 1305 S. Kansas Ave in downtown Topeka—doors open at 2 p.m. and bingo will begin at 3 p.m., with raffles and prizes including designer purses available for a $35 admission that covers 15 games.  WIBW
  • Brown’s Tree Service at 841 NW Tyler St. is giving away 1,500 cubic yards of mulch for free today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—Troy Brown said that if supplies remain, residents can call next week to arrange a pickup.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Shawnee County Crime Stoppers held its Chili Battle fundraiser on Oct. 10 at Washburn University’s Lee Arena Dance Studio—local law enforcement and board members brought chili and cinnamon rolls to raise money for anonymous tips while the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office earned its third win.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library will host a free Latin music concert with Son Venezuela on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.—the nine-piece group will perform a variety of tunes to get the audience dancing.  WIBW
  • Today Kansas Children’s Discovery Center hosted a story time featuring the NOSOTROS MEANS US book with Veronica Padilla—mayor Mike Padilla’s wife—who stressed the importance of keeping Mexican-American heritage, and another story time with former state rep Christina Haswood is set for Indigenous People’s Day.  KSNT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kansas soybean farmers are facing market challenges as China boycotted American soy—forcing them to find new buyers amid falling prices.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee County workers showed community support by hosting a scavenger hunt that stocked Doorstep’s food pantry with 10,822 items and by lighting the courthouse pink while offering a mobile mammography event — Commissioner Aaron Mays said county officials will drop the puck at the Topeka Scarecrows home opener on Friday, Oct. 17 and plan a State of the Community breakfast on Thursday, Nov. 6 at Townsite Avenue Ballroom.  WIBW
  • The City of Topeka announced on October 10 that White Lakes Plaza Apartments now have dumpsters and sanitation services after residents experienced a buildup of trash. City officials said the sanitation case remains open until the property reaches full compliance.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spavia announced a new wellness spa opening Friday, Oct. 31 + located at 2919 SW Wanamaker Road, Suite J in west Topeka. Customers can book massages + facials now, and a Founding Membership offer saving $40 monthly is available until Oct. 30.  KSNT
  • The Lotus House hosted its annual open house on Oct. 10 to offer a safe space for adults with mental illness—members helped run the facility to build confidence and ease isolation. Director Molly Kemper said the non-profit plans to expand its welcoming environment so anyone diagnosed with a mental illness can feel at home.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Sports Center Topeka is building a new two-story hitting range with 40 bays and swing tracking technology—each bay will have a full-service kitchen, and the facility is expected to be complete by mid-2026.  WIBW
