COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Topeka Zoo will host 'Boo at the Zoo', a free Halloween event that lets kids trick-or-treat around the zoo and learn about animal care using sustainably produced candy. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 18 and Oct. 25—Sunflower Cafe and Grill will offer an $8 meal deal including a hamburger or hot dog, chips and a canned soda. KSNT
- ➤ Rabbi Samuel Stern from Temple Beth Sholom in Topeka said he feels relief as hostages return to Israel following a ceasefire in the Middle East, and he noted many have sent celebratory messages after a two-year conflict that began on Simchat Torah in 2023. He said the freed hostages signal a step toward ending the war — and he hopes peace will bring a return to ordinary community life. WIBW
- ➤ A local car show raised funds on Saturday to purchase bullet and stab-proof vests costing up to $2,300 for Topeka’s K-9 officers—over 90 cars were on display with raffles, prizes, and trophies awarded. KSNT
- ➤ The No Kings protest will take place Saturday, Oct. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Kansas Statehouse south lawn in downtown Topeka. The Kansas 50501 Group said the event—part of a National Day of Action—will provide free whistles and horns, local singer performances, a march around the Statehouse, a chance to decorate crowns, and a food collection for people affected by layoffs. - ➤ Omni Circle is launching a Community Tech Hub in Central Park to provide free bilingual digital literacy training and rent technology to residents without reliable internet access—initial sessions are scheduled for Saturday, October 18 at 11 a.m. and Wednesday, October 22 at 6 p.m.—with support from the DOCK program. - ➤ Yesterday, Capitol Federal’s Topeka Boulevard branch celebrated its 75th anniversary by presenting a $7,500 check to the YWCA of Northeast Kansas. The anniversary celebration continues through Saturday—visitors may receive a complimentary cookie and an entry for a prize drawing. WIBW

- ➤ Kansas game wardens closed a 2023 trophy deer poaching investigation after a Tennessee man admitted to killing a deer in Miami County with a rifle without a valid permit—he pled guilty and was fined $5,000, with restitution of $3,960.50 and $108 in court costs. WIBW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The annual Silents in the Cathedral event will return to Grace Episcopal Cathedral on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. where the 1926 film The Bat will be shown with live musical accompaniment by Marvin Faulwell on pipe organ and Bob Keckeisen on percussion — Denise Morrison will share film history as several short films are also featured. - ➤ The Kansas Museum of History nears completion of renovations as new flooring and displays are installed ahead of its opening on Nov 22 — a new window will let visitors view part of its 122,000-piece collection stored over three levels. The museum will rotate its artifacts, starting with a milk jug from St. Mary's that shows the state’s agricultural legacy. WIBW

- ➤ Auburn Washburn USD 437 will host the Turkey Trot & Fun Run at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 at Washburn Rural High School to raise funds for local elementary schools—proceeds will go toward playground repairs and classroom projects. The event features a 5K run/walk, a fun run and a mascot race as parent-teacher organizations work together to plan the day. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Topeka City Manager Robert Perez said negotiations to sell Hotel Topeka are moving ahead after positive talks with Endeavour Hotel Group—He expects a final agreement by year’s end and noted that free digital kiosks with local maps will be discussed at the city meeting later today. WIBW
- ➤ Shawnee County planners held a town hall meeting Monday evening to gather resident opinions on solar project guidelines that limit projects to 240 acres—some residents suggested raising the size to 1,000 acres while Planning Commission Director Joni Thadani said the feedback will shape a future final draft. WIBW

- ➤ The Topeka Scarecrows and coach Robbi Nichols joined the 27 News morning show ahead of their home opener Friday, October 17 at Stormont Vail Events Center. The team is coming off two wins in Indiana—tickets for Friday and Saturday games are still available. KSNT
- ➤ K-State linebacker Desmond Purnell, a Topeka native, was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded two interceptions, including a pick-six, in a 41-28 win over TCU on Oct. 13—he also made eight tackles and a sack during the game. WIBW
