  • Breadbasket Food Pantry in Topeka has seen a surge of visitors ahead of potential SNAP cuts and now offers supplemental food boxes three days a week—staff say the growing need is straining supplies and they urge the community for more donations.  KSNT
  • Taco John's locations in Topeka are offering a free beef or bean burrito and a serving of Jr. Potato Olés to anyone affected by the expected government shutdown that will end SNAP benefits on Nov. 1 — the Community Support Special is available from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 and the chain will also donate to local food banks for each Taco Bravo sold on Nov. 6.  KSNT
  • Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka welcomes Sylvie, an 8-year-old cat in a hot dog costume who came from a family that could no longer care for her and now needs a low-key, lap-friendly home. The shelter offers $0 adoptions for Sylvie and most animals 5 months and older through Nov. 2 + it seeks new owners as kennels are full.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Topeka West HS Theatre will re-imagine the classic tale with Alice vs Wonderland with shows at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20, 21 and 22 in their auditorium—directed by seniors Joey Westphal and Kivrin Staley. The play explores adolescent challenges using six versions of Alice and admission costs $6.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College Football Playoff Foundation, School Specialty and Eckrich unveiled a new library and media center at Lincoln Elementary in Junction City on Thursday. The ceremony featured a ribbon cutting attended by Kansas State football members and USD 475 board members plus awards of one thousand dollars to librarian Kelsey Mann and a first grade teacher.  KSNT
  • Topeka’s federally funded Head Start programs are monitoring the federal shutdown—Community Action is concerned about SNAP delays and is offering emergency aid while Sheldon Head Start will keep serving children as they await federal funding decisions. Both programs are keeping a close watch on the situation to support local families.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TSA workers at Manhattan Regional Airport work without pay amid the government shutdown — air traffic controllers contracted through Midwest Air Traffic Control Services continue to receive pay and manage safe flight operations. Airport Director Brandon Keazer said there has been no staff turnover as the FAA Contract Tower Program remains in effect.  KSNT
  • City officials announced that new lane shifts will begin Tuesday, Nov. 4 in a work zone north of S.W. 21st Street and Topeka Boulevard from north of S.W. 21st Street to the Shunganunga Creek Bridge—traffic will change from northbound on the east side to southbound on the west side and left turns at the S.W. 21st Street intersection will not be allowed. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes to avoid delays.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kansans buying insurance through the ACA marketplace will face higher premiums in 2026—some companies planning hikes of up to 34%—while experts warn that without renewed subsidies from Congress, out-of-pocket costs could rise even more. Open enrollment for 2026 plans starts today and rising costs may force many to choose less comprehensive coverage options.  Kansas Reflector
