COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Topeka Rescue Mission is expanding meal services to help community members facing food insecurity due to SNAP benefit cuts. It will begin offering a free daily community lunch at Shinkle-Stutzman Park starting Monday, Nov. 3 — the service will continue with scheduled dinners until further notice. WIBW
- ➤ Let’s Help held a drive-thru food drive on Nov 1 and filled its empty pantry with donated cans of veggies, soups, and mac and cheese to support local families. The group will host its next drive on Dec 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. — all donations will stay local. WIBW
- ➤ The fifth annual Holiday Extravaganza took place on Saturday at Woodshed Event Center and featured local vendors selling handmade crafts, figurines, and treats while the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile served hot dogs — Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus joined the festivities. The Woodshed market will continue to operate every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for local shoppers. WIBW

- ➤ TerraPower, started by Bill Gates, announced a partnership with the state’s Department of Commerce and Evergy to explore putting a new natrium reactor in eastern Kansas. The reactor—cooled by hot liquid sodium and fuel with a higher uranium level—has raised safety concerns from experts who warned it could cause fires or leaks if not managed carefully. - ➤ Educators gathered yesterday at the Kansas NEA headquarters in Topeka for the 2025 NEA summit, which ran from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and featured 25 sessions focused on protecting and strengthening public education—addressing topics from staff rights to student justice. WIBW
- ➤ MANA de Topeka hosted its third Suave Agave gala at Townsite Center in downtown Topeka to raise money for scholarships for Latinas to pursue higher education — guests enjoyed tequila tasting, a four-course dinner, live and silent auctions, and adding items to a community altar on Dia de los Muertos. - ➤ The Silver Lake volleyball team clinched the 3A State Championship by defeating Holton 2-0—winning 25-21 and 25-19 in the two sets—and finished its season with a 46-1 record on Saturday. KSNT
- ➤ The Topeka Scarecrows won an overtime thriller against Indiana on Saturday night with the game tied at 3-3 until Jacob Gagnon scored with 20 seconds left—now the team stands at 5-3 and will face the Zydeco in Baton Rouge on Nov. 21 and Nov. 23. KSNT
