COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Flint Hills Breadbasket in Riley County is seeing long lines at its doors amid questions over SNAP benefits — local leaders are restocking shelves and held a food giveaway for military families at Fort Riley — to help fill the food gap. WIBW
- ➤ The Kay McFarland Trust held its first Veterans Appreciation event on Nov. 3 at the Topeka Zoo where veterans enjoyed lunch and music by the Capital City Chorus—adding support ahead of Veterans Day. Organizers plan to make this celebration an annual tribute to servicemembers. KSNT
- ➤ Seabrook Apple Market in Topeka is collecting donations for the Ronald McDonald House until 8 p.m. on Nov. 8 — a list of accepted items is available in the store. KSNT
- ➤ Northeast Kansas grocery stores and restaurants are stepping in as SNAP benefits drop, with HyVee offering free meals for children and $3 meals for older customers from Nov 3-7. Lago Vista Grill in Ozawkie is serving soup + rallying neighbors to support the community during this time of need. WIBW
- ➤ Brewster Place will host its annual Holiday Bazaar on Friday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Brewster Place Cultural Arts Center—more than 100 crafts and baked goods made by residents are set to raise funds for healthcare and community programs. WIBW
- ➤ A gala to honor military heroes will be held at Washburn University’s Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center on Nov. 14 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.—sponsored by a Washburn fraternity and Interim Healthcare. Tickets cost $20 for general admission and $10 for veterans and proceeds will aid local veterans groups. WIBW

- ➤ Charles Atkinson of the United Soybean Board toured a Goodyear tire plant to review the potential of using soybean oil in tires to boost tire durability and support local soybean markets—Goodyear plans to switch to bio-based oils by 2040 under its Sourcing Sustainably program. KSNT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ In Rossville, Krystal and Brandon Carr were married on Halloween when Krystal’s Navy brother surprised everyone by showing up; about 60 guests attended the wedding+ the event created a memorable family celebration. The surprise made the holiday even more special for the couple and their loved ones. KSNT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Shawnee County 4-H invites local youth to join its club to learn new skills, make lasting friendships and develop leadership while competing for county fair ribbons. Cooper Mengarelli, Keaton Mengarelli and Cameron Thompson visited Eye on NE Kansas to share their 4-H experiences (contact the Shawnee Co. Extension Office for more information). WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials announced that discussions with contractors have led to turns being allowed at the S.W. 21st and Topeka Boulevard intersection as construction begins today. Northbound traffic on Topeka Boulevard will shift to the southbound side—motorists are urged to plan ahead and seek alternate routes to avoid delays. WIBW
- ➤ On Monday, the USDA said it planned to send each state a notice outlining current SNAP benefit amounts from the contingency fund — Kansas DCF has not yet received the notice and will decide next steps once the information is provided. WIBW
- ➤ Loud Light, a Topeka non-profit, is working to boost youth voter turnout ahead of upcoming local elections by providing clear voting information for busy college students. Leaders such as Gabriella Griffin and Zac Surritt say increased youth engagement is key to political change+they urge young people to act by voting and even running for office if they feel unheard+. - ➤ The Kansas Livestock Association met in Washington, D.C. with Kansas lawmakers and congressional staff at the Secure America’s Workforce meeting from Oct. 21–23 to discuss immigration reform that would help livestock producers who depend on migrant labor—KLA staff stressed that current visa programs do not meet ranchers' needs. - ➤ Kansas collected $695.6 million in taxes for October — $47 million above the estimate and 4.1% higher than last October. Gov. Kelly said she will review the numbers closely, especially lower corporate taxes, as she plans the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. WIBW

- ➤ Shawnee County opened four new sand volleyball courts this afternoon in Gage Park near 10th and Civitan Ln using funds from the Gage Park Sales Tax. The 2nd-ranked Washburn Volleyball team played the first match—an outcome of local players' push for better facilities. WIBW
