- ➤ Yesterday, the Association of Fundraising Professionals Topeka Chapter honored local leaders and volunteers at the Topeka Country Club ahead of National Philanthropy Day. Award winners such as Dr. Jerry Farley and local organizations were recognized for their support + their efforts show how giving back lifts our community. WIBW
- ➤ Volunteers and Shawnee Heights students are setting up the 28th annual Winter Wonderland display at Lake Shawnee for a holiday event that opens on Nov. 26 and runs to Dec. 31. The project teaches job skills and supports TARC’s efforts—about 200 helpers have spent four to five weeks preparing the display. KSNT

- ➤ Local leaders at Thursday’s state of the community event said Topeka’s aviation sector will grow with a $10 million investment in Forbes field and a potential Hotel Topeka deal led by Roy Arnold & his company, The Endeavor Group. If finalized, the hotel deal will create jobs & boost tourism while renewing the Maner Conference Center. WIBW
- ➤ Terry Stearman, owner of Touch of Class Hair Studio in central Topeka, will retire on Dec. 18 after more than 50 years serving the community — longtime employee Christy Watkins will manage the salon going forward. KSNT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Washburn University Theatre is staging Firebringer, a musical comedy featuring students Taylor Moore and Terry Symonette that explores a clash over the responsible use of fire as a new technology. Performances occur today at 7:30 p.m., on Nov 8 and Nov 13-15 at 7:30 p.m., and at 2 p.m. on Nov 16 at the Garvey Fine Arts Center. WIBW
- ➤ The Kansas Museum of History will hold its grand reopening celebration Saturday, Nov. 22, with doors opening at 9 a.m. and the program starting at 9:30 a.m.—museum director Sarah Bell said the event will include musical performances, reenactors, speeches, a first look at the new gallery, and shuttle service from overflow parking at the former Hollywood Theaters lot. - ➤ Jaiden Kurzen from Olpe High School was named Scholar Athlete of the Week. The lineman, who plays football, basketball, and baseball while holding a 3.77 GPA and studying welding technology at Flint Hills Technical College, will enter a drawing for one of two $2,500 scholarships from Briggs Auto — Kansas 811. - ➤ On Thursday, Kansas regulators approved a plan to shield home power bills by shifting more costs to major power users to prevent rate spikes. Evergy said the rule will help meet growing demand from projects like data centers—large electricity users that require new power systems. WIBW
- ➤ KDOT is accepting comments online until November 20 on a study to improve safety along U.S. 75 from Holton to K-20—evaluating options like roadway expansion or interim fixes after residents reported increased risks since 2017 floods. Concerned locals shared near misses and heavy traffic worries to help shape future safety measures. WIBW
- ➤ The USPS at 1410 NW Gage Blvd is using a new sorting machine that processes up to 5,000 packages per hour and new vehicles designed with extra space to speed up holiday shipping—customers are encouraged to mail orders early to meet the December 17th delivery deadline. Mark Inglett said the changes aim to improve both safety and efficiency for carriers this season. WIBW
- ➤ New Kansas rules approved Thursday require businesses using more than 75 megawatts to pay extra under a special fee plan. The plan forces companies to sign a 12-year contract—plus an extra five-year ramp up—and to pay 80% of their agreed bill even when they use less power. Kansas Reflector
