COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka’s Arab Shrine Temple will hold a Dueling Pianos fundraiser on Nov. 15 to support Shriners helping children — doors open at 6 p.m. with entertainment from 7 to 10 p.m. and tickets cost $35 at the door.  WIBW
  • The Downtown Topeka Foundation now has all the funding to build a year-round ice rink in Evergy Plaza after receiving a final gift of $350,000 from the Security Benefit Charitable Trust on Nov. 11. The ice rink project will be ready by fall 2026 to boost downtown activity—realizing a dream that has lasted over 10 years.  WIBW
  • The Fly In Chili Feed will take place on Saturday, November 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3600 NE Sardou, Bldg. 15 to raise funds for Aviation Explorers Post 8—supporting young Topeka aviators with tickets priced at $13 for adults and $8 for children under 10.  WIBW
  • The Washburn Rural Junior Blues Marching Band played hymns to honor veterans at the Colmery-O’Neil Veterans Administration Medical Center on November 11. Veterans gathered at 2200 SW Gage Blvd to acknowledge their service—highlighting the flag ceremony during the tribute.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Topeka’s annual Identity Quest Symposium will take place at the Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where genealogy librarian Sherri Camp will share tools on using DNA for family research with featured speaker Kathleen Brandt.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Topeka Police Department Citizens Academy Ambassadors are selling T-shirts ahead of Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9 and are urging donations to rebuild a fallen officers memorial that a drunk driver destroyed in November 2022 using funds from a campaign launched in June to raise $900,000 by October while T-shirt orders run from Nov 18 to Dec 1.  WIBW
  • Washburn University held its 38th Veterans Day ceremony yesterday at 11:11 a.m. to honor veterans and mark the armistice that ended World War I, with military transitions coordinator Chris Bowers and keynote speaker Mike Padilla stressing the unity of service (Bowers said 'when we serve together, we are united together').  WIBW

  • Dr. Christina Menager leads the 'Hear me. See me.' podcast that explains how military service can affect mental health—she discusses warning signs and advises veterans and families to seek help from the VA. The program highlights the challenges veterans face and the ongoing efforts to reduce stigma.  WIBW
