COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local non-profit now known as Moving Ahead Partnership is expanding its mission to end homelessness by linking people to housing, jobs & support services. The group now includes more than 60 local organizations and operates every Tuesday and Thursday at Topeka’s Salvation Army at 1320 SE Sixth St.  KSNT
  • Numerous Evergy customers in northeast Kansas lost power Friday — more than 2,000 residents in Brown and Doniphan counties, including areas like Highland, Hiawatha and Robinson, are affected. The utility has not yet identified the cause or set a repair schedule.  KSNT
  • The Breadbasket Food Pantry reopened Friday after a fire on Wednesday night damaged part of the building—neighbors and volunteers helped with food distribution and cleanup. The pantry is working with the city and contractors to plan next steps—fire officials said the fire seemed to be arson.  WIBW
  • Topeka firefighters are collecting donations for the city's 'Oh SNAP!' fundraiser to help families affected by interruptions in the government food program. Donations are accepted at several locations today from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.—with funds set for distribution to local food banks by the United Way of Kaw Valley.  KSNT

CULTURE NEWS

  • It Takes a Village, Inc. will present its 10th-anniversary production of The Chocolate Nutcracker on Nov. 22 at the Topeka Performing Arts Center — the show is set for 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with a creative twist on a classic ballet.  WIBW
  • Today, the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library hosts the INKED exhibit that honors Maud Wagner, the country’s first female tattoo artist—her unique story was shared by expert Lisa Soller—and the exhibit will remain open until November 30.  KSNT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ross Elementary in Topeka has begun work on a Musical Garden Sculpture featuring mallets and drums—an addition that cost $16,000 raised by community efforts. The project supports the school's creative focus and gives students a new way to express themselves.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee County Treasurer Susan Duffy reminded residents that property tax bills will soon arrive and can be paid online, in person, by mail or drop box—first-half taxes are due Dec. 22 while second-half taxes will be due May 11.  WIBW
  • Crews are working to repair a 12-inch water main break on Gage Boulevard north of 29th Street and have closed the southbound lanes—drivers can follow detour routes while repairs continue. Businesses in the area have been notified and the lanes are expected to reopen in two to three weeks.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at the Kansas Health Institute found that poor broadband service can hurt health in rural areas. A $14 million investment in Emporia and updated county data coming soon may help lawmakers improve internet access statewide — showing how essential the internet has become in getting vital services.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • A local sports review found that Kansas high school playoffs have seen top seeds win most football, soccer and tennis games. Fans looking for a Cinderella story will have little to cheer as seeding remains strong throughout—only one upset occurred in a 3A tennis match.  Kansas Reflector
