COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ducky, a one-year-old pit bull mix with a sweet personality, is available for a name your price adoption with a $0 minimum at Helping Hands Humane Society. The shelter welcomes visitors to bring other pets (to see how they get along) and help find a new home for him.  WIBW
  • Topeka’s 30th annual Miracle on Kansas Ave will feature a Christmas Village at Evergy Plaza, a parade at 6 p.m., and fireworks after the festivities on Dec. 6. Maria the Mexican will open the event with a special performance in front of the main stage—broadcast live to the community.  WIBW
  • Be Filled of South Topeka will host its first-ever Winter Wonderland Gala at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Rosewood Event Center—3216 SW 29th St to fund its food pantry efforts. Tickets cost $125.  WIBW
  • The Topeka Salvation Army started its 2025 Red Kettle campaign with a $496,000 goal on Friday, Nov. 21 at its location at 1320 S.E. 6th Ave. Red kettles were placed at about 20 local businesses daily, except on Sundays, until Dec. 24.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • West Ridge Mall wrapped up its West Ridge Live series after hosting eight bands over the past months, and the mall announced new concerts starting in February — promising more local music action.  KSNT
  • Today the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka reopens at 9:00 a.m. after three years and $6 million in renovations, and visitors enjoy free admission through December—showing the museum's thanks for local support. The updated museum features themed exhibits—designed for a more immersive and interactive display that brings Kansas history to life.  Kansas Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Landon Middle School hosted a Career Day on Nov. 21 where professionals from martial arts — engineering — cosmetology shared insights on their daily work and education paths; principal Amy Wagner said the event helped students plan high school courses based on their interests.  WIBW
  • McEachron Elementary brought the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade to the Capital City last Friday—students carried balloons in a mini-parade across the school halls. Kindergarten teacher Diane Jones said her class read stories to learn about the parade’s origins—linking holiday tradition with classroom lessons.  WIBW
  • Pauline South Elementary in the Auburn-Washburn district held its 25th annual Thanksgiving lunch on Friday before sending students home for break—high school students helped with the event while the Washburn Rural Orchestra provided music and the soccer team assisted with cleanup.  WIBW

  • Topeka fire officials share safety tips for Thanksgiving as most home cooking fires start when ovens or stoves are left unattended—residents should check electrical cords for holiday lights, keep trees away from heat, and use caution with turkey fryers.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Agriculture has issued an animal health alert after an outbreak of equine herpesvirus was traced to a rodeo in Waco that led to the cancellation of the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo in Mulvane—some horses returning to Kansas are now being checked twice daily and isolated for up to 21 days. Horse owners are urged to monitor their animals for fever, nasal discharge, weakness, or neurological signs and contact a veterinarian if symptoms occur.  WIBW
  • A holiday grief workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon Saturday, November 29 at the YWCA of NE Kansas—Grief Counselor Phelica Glass will guide participants using a special coloring book to reflect on their emotions during the season.  WIBW
