- ➤ Sole Reason will host its first Sneakers for Santa 5K Run/Walk on Dec. 13 at Garfield Park, 1600 NE Quincy. Participants will check in at 8 a.m. and start at 9 a.m. while families enjoy photos with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Chester Cheetah—donations of new or used footwear may win prizes and help provide shoes for kids in need. - ➤ Alma is hosting the 'Shop Small Alma' event on Small Business Saturday with breakfast starting at 8 a.m. at Alma United Methodist Church, a Holiday Hustle Callea Mae 5K and mini-mile run at 9:45 a.m., and carriage rides, crafts, a Christmas Market at local venues, and a Santa visit at the Alma Fire Station between 10:30 a.m. and noon—inviting residents to jump-start their holiday shopping. - ➤ AAA and KVC Kansas are partnering for a Joy Drive to help foster children in Topeka this holiday season. Donations of unwrapped toys, gift cards and clothing are welcomed at the AAA store—1223 SW Wanamaker Road—and at KVC—419 SW 29th St—until Dec. 16. The Topeka Capital-Journal
- ➤ Grace Episcopal Cathedral will mark 50 years tomorrow after an arsonist started a fire that badly damaged the building nearly 50 years ago, and church members held a special service on November 23 to share memories and prayers. Church officials say the experience strengthened their resolve to rebuild and honor their past – now the congregation looks forward to a future of unity. KSNT
- ➤ Motorcycle enthusiasts from A.B.A.T.E. of Kansas Dist. 4 will hold their 42nd annual Toys for Tots ride this Sunday, Nov. 30 — registration begins at noon at South Topeka Walmart with the ride leaving at 2 p.m. for The Woodshed event center. Participants will donate a new toy as their registration fee, and those not riding may drop off toys at either location. WIBW
- ➤ Topeka’s 58th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner still needs nonperishable food donations with items such as canned green beans, canned sweet potatoes, boxed stuffing mix, and canned jellied cranberries accepted at Stormont Vail Events Center Exhibition Hall—donations are underway and the meal will be served from noon to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day for anyone who wishes to join. - ➤ Dennis Rogers, a Topeka native and proud member of the Navajo Nation, has spent nearly four decades teaching Native American history and culture in Kansas—he now travels through 73 counties to help students embrace and celebrate their heritage. WIBW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, new Topeka police recruits from TPD 69 completed a 1.3-mile run from the law enforcement center to the Fallen Officers Memorial at the statehouse to honor fallen officers and build teamwork ahead of their graduation next month — senior staff managed traffic during rainy conditions. WIBW
- ➤ Shawnee County Emergency Management and AAA advise travelers to plan routes, pack extra supplies—such as phone chargers and warm clothing—and share their travel plans with someone ahead of Thanksgiving as holiday road traffic is expected to cause delays. They warned that emergency assistance may take longer due to higher call volumes. WIBW
- ➤ Kansas lawmakers passed a new child care law that consolidates services into the Office of Early Childhood and lets unlicensed providers care for up to four children for 35 hours a week—an effort to improve access in rural areas. Child care advocates warn the change may lower safety standards by removing requirements for background checks, CPR, and first aid while the office will be operational by June. Kansas Reflector
