COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ First Presbyterian Church in downtown Topeka will host its annual Noon Noels program starting Dec. 3, offering free lunch and music with a suggested donation of $7—set to continue on Dec. 10 and 17. A Blue Christmas service will be held on Dec. 9 to comfort those in loss and is open to everyone. WIBW
- ➤ Topeka Rescue Mission is keeping its warming centers closed because weather conditions have not reached dangerous levels; the shelter continues to offer regular services and cold-weather exceptions—further activating community-wide measures if wind chills, low temperatures, or prolonged precipitation worsen. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The annual Nativities & Noels event at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2401 SW Kingsrow Rd features nearly 900 nativity displays from about 100 countries — the event runs Dec. 5th to Dec. 7th with a special musical celebration at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6th — and is free for the community. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City of Topeka began preparations Sunday night to treat roads, bridges, and overpasses, and 23 snowplows were deployed by 6:30 a.m. Monday—with four contractor crews assisting to clear snow across the city. WIBW
- ➤ On Dec. 1, Shawnee County Emergency Management Director Dusty Nichols reminded residents to take winter weather precautions—urging them to dress warmly and prepare proper emergency supplies as snow and cold set in. WIBW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas and Topeka’s St. Francis hospital have not reached a contract agreement ahead of the contract expiring Dec. 31, which will leave many members with out-of-network coverage from Jan. 1 — officials say discussions will continue in hopes of reaching a resolution. - ➤ Linda Heitzman-Powell, a pediatric professor at the University of Kansas, helped create the OASIS program to teach parents skills that support children with autism.
