COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka Sharp Honda raised nearly $8,000 for breast cancer research during October by donating a portion of each car sale to the American Cancer Society & marked its 12th year of community support. The family business also benefits local groups like the zoo and humane society.  WIBW
  • Capper Foundation (a nonprofit) received a $2,000 grant from the Topeka Evening Sertoma Club; the funds will be used to build a pediatric sensory room near its lobby to give children a calming space during services.  WIBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers will open at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 (at 1415 S.W. Wanamaker Road on the west side) in a space that replaced Steak ‘n Shake. Locals near Panera and a Sam’s Club can enjoy a closer spot for chicken fingers.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Holiday Joy with the Topeka Festival Singers will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15 at White Concert Hall on the Washburn University campus. The event features performances by the Landon Middle School choir and guest musicians, holiday decorations and a wine bar (open 6-9).  WIBW
  • Faith Lutheran will host a drive-through living nativity on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. at its First Lutheran Church south parking lot near SW Huntoon and Fairlawn — drivers will receive MP3 players that tell the Christmas story as live animals, actors, and volunteers bring the scenes to life.  WIBW
  • A historic Tiffany window from First Presbyterian Church was auctioned in New York on Thursday morning but the church did not accept the $1.25 million bid. The window will soon return to 817 S.W. Harrison St. where it has drawn visitors for over 100 years.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Officials reported Kansas’ unemployment rate held at 3.8% in September with labor force participation rising to 67.1%. Private-sector jobs dropped by 2,000 amid an overall loss of 300 jobs (data from the Labor Department), and the November report will be released Jan. 7.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Topeka West High School spent months preparing exhibits for National History Day on themes of Revolution, Reaction, & Reform. Their Historical Inquiry class showcased projects on topics such as Mexican Americans on the Santa Fe Railroad, building skills ahead of a regional competition.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stormont Vail Health opened a new outpatient behavioral health clinic this week in a renovated building at 2601 SW 3rd St- a former state hospital site- to provide extra space for therapy, psychological testing and medication management. It is the first step in a phased upgrade to meet rising mental health needs in the community.  WIBW
  • Local experts advise those in recovery to plan holiday gatherings by discussing alcohol presence and setting boundaries (like avoiding high-risk family parties) to ease pressures during the festive season. Recovery specialists in Topeka stress open communication and self-care for safer celebrations.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Washburn soccer's season ended with a 2-1 loss against Franklin Pierce in the national semifinal—freshman Kate Hinck scored Washburn's only goal before Franklin Pierce netted two late goals to seal the win and the team's season ended at a 14-3-7 record.  WIBW
