COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Topeka Bible Church is hosting its annual live Christmas light show that uses thousands of dazzling lights synchronized with live music. The event runs tonight until Sunday at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m at 1135 SW College Avenue near 10th and Mulvane.  WIBW
  • Muffin and other pets aged five months and older are offered for free adoption at Helping Hands Humane Society through Sunday, Dec. 14—thanks to a gift from Hill’s Pet Nutrition. The shelter is hosting its annual Christmas for the Animals event with special meals and toys while also accepting chew toy donations.  WIBW

  • Sparrow Coffee Co will run the official coffee shop at Link Innovation Labs in downtown Topeka starting in Q1 2026 — a partnership sponsored by KBS Constructors to support local entrepreneurs and visitors.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washburn University held its fall graduation on Friday, Dec. 12 at Lee Arena where students and families celebrated academic achievements and discussed future career moves amid changing job markets influenced by AI.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee County Public Works said NW 46th reopened last week while work avoids full closures today + Auburn Rd remains closed with a June finish, and a public meeting is scheduled in January on widening NW Rochester Rd set to begin in 2029.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • LiveWell Shawnee County held its annual gathering on Dec. 12 to review health progress, noting a drop in youth vaping rates and reduced mental health days while setting priorities for the CHIP; coalition members will roll out nutrition education programs + outreach to address obesity and overdose deaths.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Wetmore star Mike Bradley (three-sport standout) will be inducted into the KSHSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2026. He set records in track and earned All-State honors in football and basketball at Wetmore High.  WIBW
