ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have dropped to their lowest this year — boosting holiday travel plans as AAA Kansas expects 1.25 million people to hit the road and urges drivers to check their vehicles.  WIBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kansas Board of Regents reviewed feedback from professors, administrators, and legislators on draft tenure and workload policies for state universities. The board will vote on the proposals in January to increase transparency and accountability in academic personnel decisions.  Kansas Reflector

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Transportation is closing eastbound I-70 through downtown starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 for Polk-Quincy Viaduct repairs; drivers must follow detour routes & use alternative exits until work ends on Sunday, Dec. 21 while westbound traffic stays open.  WIBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Topeka hospitals see more heart-related visits during the holidays as people eat, drink, and relax more, which may lead to quick heartbeats and chest discomfort. Dr. Bashar Amr (Cotton O’Neil Heart Center) advises limiting alcohol and sodium to keep hearts healthy.  WIBW
  • KDHE said the CDC now advises waiting until after two months to give the Hepatitis B shot to newborns of negative mothers while still letting providers offer the birth dose for at-risk cases (after discussing risks and benefits) and stressed that families can decide based on these guidelines.  WIBW
